Traditional Chinese Medicine Day – March 17

While many know March 17 as St. Patrick’s Day, it is also Traditional Chinese Medicine Day.

With a history spanning thousands of years, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a holistic approach to health that focuses on restoring balance and supporting the body’s vital energy, known as Qi. In 1929, this ancient practice nearly faced elimination, but dedicated practitioners came together on March 17 to advocate for its preservation and modernization — securing its future for generations to come.

Today, TCM continues to thrive worldwide, blending ancient wisdom with modern healthcare to support wellness, healing, and balance.

On this Traditional Chinese Medicine Day, we celebrate the resilience and enduring value of this time-honored medicine.

We’re proud to support our community’s health through acupuncture and holistic care.

As temperatures rise and we shed our heavy jackets to bask in the sun, we welcome Spring. It’s a beautiful season, but it also marks a peak time for seasonal allergies. As plants release pollen, you’ll likely notice many people sneezing and sniffling from hay fever symptoms.

Hay fever is quite common, it affects 1 in 5 people in Australia. And despite its name, it is not cause by hay and doesn’t trigger up a fever. Typical symptoms may include blocked or running nose, itchy eyes, sneezing or congestion and sometime sinus pressure. While there is no cure for it, there are ways to manage the discomfort.

Minimizing Exposure to Allergens
Understanding the cause of Hay Fever helps us to find solutions. One of the simplest methods is avoidance. Wearing a standard face mask can reduce pollen particles range from 10 to 100 microns (µm). Surgical masks block particles as small as 3 µm, and N95 mask can block up to 004 µm. However, while outdoors enjoying fresh air, wearing a mask might not always be feasible, and it won’t protect your eyes from allergy reactions.

In addition to conventional medications like antihistamines that suppress histamine release, acupuncture is a natural alternative.

Acupuncture: A Natural Remedy for Pollen Allergy
Acupuncture may alleviate hay fever symptoms by stimulating energy points in the body, helping to reduce histamine release and the inflammation that follows. One notable effect of acupuncture is the release of endorphin (natural chemicals produced by the body that help relieve pain and reduce stress) and other anti-inflammatory neurotransmitters, which can reduce the body’s over–reaction to allergies.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Day, observed on March 17th, highlights the resilience and significance of this ancient practice. Despite nearly facing extinction during early 20th-century political upheavals, TCM has persisted and evolved. In the late 19th century, China’s resistance to modernization left it vulnerable, leading to a push for Westernization. By 1929, a proposal at a Nanjing conference sought to abolish TCM, but widespread opposition led to a pivotal meeting in Shanghai on March 17. TCM practitioners advocated for integration into education and modern healthcare, resulting in the establishment of TCM universities by the 1950s.

Today, TCM has gained global recognition, with acupuncture practiced in 183 countries and growing practitioner numbers in places like Australia. As we celebrate Traditional Chinese Medicine Day, we honor its enduring legacy and its ability to adapt while preserving ancient wisdom. At David Lee Acupuncture, we use techniques like acupuncture, moxibustion, and herbal medicine to address root causes of disharmony, aiming to restore health according to TCM principles.

Understanding "Damp Heat" in Summer: A TCM Perspective
Sydney summers offer perfect beach days and beautiful weather, but the combination of high temperatures and humidity can challenge the body’s balance. Prolonged exposure to extreme weather can affect the body’s internal energy, creating imbalances. One common imbalance in summer is "Damp Heat," a condition caused by an excess of moisture and heat in the body.

Signs of Damp Heat
Damp Heat can disrupt the body's balance, leading to symptoms such as:
• Physical fatigue and sluggishness
• Dizziness or chest congestion
• A sensation of heat or fever without a rise in temperature
• A thick, white tongue coating with red coloration
• Sticky stools and difficulty with bowel movements
• Reduced urination with a yellowish tint
• A burning sensation in the a**s during bowel movements
What Causes Damp Heat in the body?
Although both Dampness and Heat contribute to the body's energy imbalance, Dampness often plays a more dominant role. It is commonly seen as a sign of obstructed Qi flow, which traps Heat within the body. By clearing Dampness, Qi can then move freely, allowing Heat to disperse and restoring balance.

What is Dampness?
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Dampness is a pathogenic factor that hinders the flow of Qi and blood, resulting in sensations of heaviness, sluggishness, and stickiness in the body. A common analogy compares Dampness to walking in the rain without an umbrella—your clothes become soaked and cling to you. Similarly, when energy flows within you but lacks smoothness, that is what Dampness feels like.

The primary causes of Dampness include:
• Internal factors: Dysfunction in the Spleen and Stomach, which are responsible for digestion and energy conversion. When these organs don't function optimally, Dampness can accumulate.
• External factors: Living in a humid environment can exacerbate Dampness, particularly during the hot and humid summer months.
Remedies for Damp Heat
To prevent or alleviate Damp Heat, consider the following:
1. Adjust Your Diet: Avoid greasy, fried, spicy, and overly sweet foods that can exacerbate Damp Heat. Opt for cooling foods like cucumbers, watermelon, mung bean and other hydrating options to cool the body.
2. Manage Stress: Emotional disturbances can block the flow of Qi, worsening imbalances in the body.
3. Avoid Heat and Humidity: Minimize exposure to excessive heat and damp environments to maintain your body’s balance.

When Self-Management Isn’t Enough
Sometimes, lifestyle changes aren’t sufficient to completely address Damp Heat. In such cases, TCM therapies like cupping and acupuncture can help:
• Cupping: Improves local circulation and releases stagnation.
• Acupuncture: Regulates Qi flow and enhances the body’s metabolism.
At David Lee Acupuncture, we integrate these techniques into a holistic approach to support both physical and mental well-being. By addressing the root causes of Damp Heat, we help you restore balance and vitality.
