Troy's TEST for Diabetes

Troy's TEST for Diabetes As a legacy to Troy this page is to raise awareness of Type 1 Diabetes and Diabetic Ketoacidosis als A beloved only son. He was so happy.

TROY's Story

Troy was in the prime of his life at 25 years of age. He lived life true to himself, completely at home in his own skin, completely happy just being himself. But on the 27th September, 2014, he died suddenly from sudden onset Type 1 Diabetes leading to Diabetic Ketoacidosis [DKA] It is a day that is etched in my memory and the grief of losing him is with me every minute of every day. His sisters lost a wonderful, loving brother and friend, and people who knew him lost a best friend too. Troy's infectious nature brought love and laughter into our lives. His calmness enveloped you in times of worry or stress. His easy going and gentle nature warmed your soul. He taught us how the simple pleasures in life are the ones we should treasure. LIFE'S LIKE A RIVER, GO WITH THE FLOW was his motto. The week before Troy lost his life he felt unwell and took himself to the Dr. He was diagnosed with an infected throat and given antobiotics. The days that followed, Troy was working away from home so I was unaware if he was improving or experiencing any other symptoms. He certainly didn't mention to any work mates or to the friends he was staying with that he felt unwell. That week he was working in a job he loved and he apparently found out at the end of the week that a permanent position was coming his way. On the Friday night he went out with work colleagues to celebrate and later went to bed that night full of joy. He woke early the next day at 6am apparently feeling quite unwell. His friend heard him in the bathroom and asked him if he was ok as it sounded like he was vomiting. Troy responded that he would be alright so his friend went back to bed. When his friend woke he noticed that the bathroom door was still closed. He called out to Troy but there was no response. He mananged to look through a window and saw Troy's slumped body blocking the door. He called 000, managed to gain access to the bathroom and started CPR. Troy was pronounced dead at the hospital when taken by ambulance. It was not till 7 months later that we received the Post Mortom report. Troy died from DKA.Diabetic Ketoacidosis. Troy had never been diagnosed as Diabetic. He did not exhibit any of the more common symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes, like weight loss or excesive thirst, leading up to this tragedy. However, he did have flu like symptoms the week before. This actually can be a sign of Diabetes and in fact DKA can be the first presentation of Diabetes Mellitus/ Type 1 Diabetes. DKA can be the first symptom for people with unknown Diabetes, they therefore, are more at risk because the symptoms can mimic many illnesses. Unless diagnosed one can die very quickly and this is what happened to our dear boy. The fight now is stop this from happening to others and unfortunately it is becoming far too frequent. It is vital to promote awareness of the signs and symptoms of DKA.

I received an email from Shellharbour Sharks re the upcoming Troy Oldroyd Memorial Golf Day .
The poster and information has been detailed by them.
I feel so happy that they recognise the importance of raising awareness of Type 1 Diabetes , supporting the Danii Foundation that I am an ambassador for , while this event is also one of there major fund-raisers.

It is just over 10 years that Troy lost his life to Type 1 diabetes. An autoimmune disease that he didnt get the chance to fight. He was a young 25 years .

This event is a great honour to Troy and my family certainly appreciate and thank Shellharbour Sharks for their support.

I know it will be a huge success.
So get a team together and look forward to a wonderful day of golfing ,community, awarness and FUN.

Hi Wobbegongs,

a quick reminder that next Saturday, 15th July is Sally's "Dive in for Diabetes" morning. The main aim of the morning is to raise awareness of Type 1 Diabetes and the importance of annual testing (Blood Glucose Level test).

From around 7.30am on the Saturday morning, Sally and Julie will be on the beach with Blood Glucose Test Kits. If you wish, a quick test before your morning swim. For most accurate test results, it is better if no brekky, no morning tea or coffee, save these for after your test.

Around 9am we have a couple of short swims planned, our Dive In for Diabetes Swims (hoping you'll ditch the wetsuits). After the swim, we will have morning tea on the beach and draw the raffles. Coffee will be available from Emma's van.

It would be really appreciated if some could bring a small plate of snacks, fruit, something to share for morning tea.

Finally, it is still not too late to donate to Sally's chosen charity, the Danii Foundation. You can click on the link shown below if you wish to donate or speak with Sally. The Danii Foundation's aim is to increase Type 1 Diabetes awareness, to provide support for those with this disease and to make affordable technologies to monitor glucose levels.

See you all next Saturday morning (and again on Sunday for our normal race day events).

Very happy to be part of another fund-raising event for Type 1 diabetes, specifically to promote awareness

DIVE IN FOR DIABETES - an initiative proudly organised and supported by us, your favourite winter swimming club.

This July we encourage you to GET WET and raise money for vital research into Type 1 Diabetes.

This cause is close to home as our beautiful Wobby treasures Sally Oldroyd and Martin lost their son to a disease he didn't even know he had.

What do you need to do? Scan the QR code or enter the link, share it with your friends and family and start fundraising! Then, on one or more days over National Diabetes Week (July 8-15) we dare you to get wet! You can jump in the ocean or in a pool without a wetsuit! and dunk yourself. That's it! Cold water immersion is scientifically proven to be AMAZING and in July the ocean temperature should be a balmy 14ish degrees!

On Saturday July 15 we'll have a fun event down on Husky beach (more details to follow), including a raffle with some great prizes!

So DIVE IN FOR DIABETES this July and help us raise money for an excellent cause.

Thanks to all our Supporters - TODAY we CELEBRATE CHANGE for all Australians who live with Type 1 diabetes!!

Dear DANII Friends

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ACCESS TO CGM!

TODAY we finally deliver !!!

DANII Foundation is delighted to announce “officially” Government subsidised access to Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) for all Australians living with Type 1 diabetes is finally here, which means our entire Australian Type 1 diabetes community is now eligible to access CGM at a reduced cost of only $32.50 per month!

Details of this exciting CGM Subsidy Initiative and HOW to Access…

Q1. How can I access CGM via this initiative?
There are two pathways in which you can access subsidised Continuous Glucose Monitoring

1. Existing CGM users can qualify for streamlined access if they:
o are an active user of CGM which you either self-fund or have a DANII Foundation CGM Scholarship and you have accessed and have been receiving the product directly from the supplier between 1 January 2022 and 1 June 2022, and
o will be continuing to use the same CGM device

If you meet the above requirements, the process is as follows:
1. You will need to access the CGM expansion form https://www.ndss.com.au/cgm-expansion-form/
2. Validate your NDSS registration details using your Last Name and NDSS number
3. Complete the online form to confirm your contact details and the CGM device you are currently using AND consent to the information they have provided to be validated with the device supplier
4. NDSS will then contact the supplier to confirm validation
5. Once validated, you will receive a notification from NDSS. Following this, you will be able to order and collect subsidised CGM products from your local NDSS Access Point/Pharmacy

If you do not meet the requirements of an ‘existing active’ user, you will need to follow the 'New User' process, as detailed below:
1. You will need to review the eligibility criteria available https://www.ndss.com.au/about-the-ndss/cgm-initiative/ and speak to your Health Care Professional (HCP) to determine which CGM is right for you.
2. You and your HCP will then need to complete the relevant Access Form found https://www.ndss.com.au/about-the-ndss/cgm-initiative/ *Note – The form needs to be signed by your HCP
3. Diabetes Australia will then contact your to confirm eligibility for access to the Government subsidised CGM product
4. The initial CGM kit will be sent to your HCP for start and guidance
5. Following on from here, you will then be able to order and collect subsidised CGM products from your local NDSS Access Point/Pharmacy

Q2. How can I switch from one CGM product to another via this initiative?
If you are already using a subsidised CGM and want to switch to another product, you will simply need to speak with your HCP, and visit https://www.ndss.com.au/living-with-diabetes/managing-diabetes/continuous-glucose-monitoring/ for a switch form. You will need the help of your HCP to help you complete and sign the required form.

Ten long years of pounding on the doors of Politicians and walking the corridors of Parliament House! DANII Foundation friends, together with Danii’s Army have raised funds and provided hundreds of CGM Scholarships since we created the DANII Foundation. To say the least, we are elated about this life-changing and life-saving initiative.

DANII Foundation looks forward to working with the Department of Health, fellow diabetes support networks, Clinicians, diabetes educators, pharmacists and wholesalers on the implementation of this long-awaited reform to the National Diabetes Services Scheme.

DANII Foundation’s Vision and Mission continues in providing Technology Support for those most in need. We know for many families the cost of Insulin Pumps that can now blue-tooth to the Continuous Glucose Monitors is still very much financially out of reach. DANII will continue to support this needy T1D Community into better, safer living with technology.

It is our foundation belief that all adults and children diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes as well as those with Type 2 diabetes who are insulin dependent should receive structured education about glucose self-monitoring. All Australians with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes should be able to access diabetes self-management education and support programs.

DANII will continue to work with our Expert Medical Teams to create and run these much needed Education programmes. These programmes we aim to include head-space well-being. DANII will continue to advocate for a Type 1 Diabetes Voice.

There is much still to do in this space. Today we have much to celebrate !

I take this opportunity to THANK YOU for your Support over 10 Years and look forward to continuing our Journey together.

As Albert Einstein once said “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving”

Sincerely,
Donna Meads-Barlow
