Brene Brown makes a distinction between the two. Joy is soulful, a deep and intense connection and appreciation. Whereas Happiness is directly linked to one’s immediate environment and current circumstances.

Brene Brown expresses that Joy should be what we aim for, not happiness, because with joy comes contentment. And contentment leads to satisfaction with what we have, not what we feel we need to change.

Shame, guilt, humiliation and embarrassment are all socially inflicted emotions, they happen and heal between people, and empathy is a hostile environment for them.

Self-compassion is often the first step to healing – we need to be kind to ourselves before we can give kindness and love to someone else.
