👟🤢Shoes can become damp and smelly after a long day at work, and especially after being active. Airing shoes outdoors (if feasible) can be beneficial for several reasons:

✅ Reduces odours: Fresh air helps disperse trapped smells, keeping your shoes smelling better.

✅ Dries out moisture: Outdoor air, especially with some sunlight, helps evaporate sweat and dampness that can build up inside shoes.

✅ Prevents mould & mildew: A dry, well-ventilated environment reduces the risk of mould and mildew from growing.

✅ Kills bacteria (if sunny): UV rays from the sun can help kill bacteria and germs inside shoes.

✅ Refreshes shoes naturally: Airing outside avoids the need for chemical sprays or deodorisers.

It’s important to not leave shoes out in the sun for too long, as sometimes materials can warp or fade in colour.

🏃‍♂️❄️Our exercise physiologist, Trevor, braved the chill at the Hunter Valley Winery Half Marathon 2025 this weekend 💪

And when we say chill, we mean a freezing 0 degrees at the start line! 🥶🫣

With a course that challenged the legs with some rolling inclines and a total elevation of 304m, Trevor powered through the picturesque Wandin Estate vineyards and clocked a solid race time of 1:55:48 👌🏆

The challenge was tough, the views were stunning, and Trev’s performance was amazing! 👏

Massive kudos to you, Trevor!💪

JOIN OUR TEAM! We’re looking for a friendly and reliable part-time receptionist to be the first smile that greets every visitor at Southwest Wellness Centre. If you love creating great first impressions, helping others feel genuinely looked after, and being part of a supportive team, we’d love to hear from you.

This part-time role includes a full day shift on Monday (7.30am-4.30pm) and 2-3 afternoon shifts (Tues, Wed, Thurs 3.30pm-8pm) You’ll be joining a caring team who believe in health, wellness and making a real difference in our clients lives.

At Southwest Wellness Centre, customer care is at the heart of everything we do. We take pride in making every client feel respected, valued and comfortable from the moment they arrive. As our receptionist, you'll play a key role in making that happen, whether it's answering calls with warmth, keeping schedules on track, or helping the day run smoothly with a calm and capable presence.

Experience in a medical centre or allied health clinic is definitely a plus, as is familiarity with Nookal and the NDIS. But more than anything, we value the right attitude and a genuine passion for customer service. We’re after someone who’s approachable, organised and adaptable as the tasks vary on our busy reception desk.

The ‘Runner’s High’

The term ‘runner’s high’ is a euphoric state and transient feeling that people experience after endurance exercise. Research suggests people report better mood and improved mental state and cognitive functioning post exercise.

Certain neurotransmitters have been linked to the ‘runner’s high’ such as ‘endorphins’, which reduce the perception of pain as well as increase mood, but recent studies suggest also ‘endocannabinoids’ which may have a more direct impact to mood, stress reduction and euphoria.

The ‘endocannabinoids’ are thought to be more responsible for changes in mood and mental state as it crosses the blood brain barrier compared to ‘endorphins’ which do not easily cross the blood brain barrier, meaning it has more peripheral effects in the body and not necessarily the brain.

Other neurotransmitters that contribute after/during exercise include ‘noradrenaline/norepinephrine’ which support mood changes but also increase alertness and mental clarity.

How to experience the ‘Runner’s High’?

Although strength training can also improve mood and reduce anxiety, it does so through different biological mechanisms. Aerobic endurance, especially steady state exercise seems to be the main driver of experiencing the runner’s high effect.

If you are a just starting out, look to aim for approx. 30min a day of steady state exercise, such as walking, cycling, running and swimming. Aim to complete the session at a moderate intensity (3 - 5/10 RPE scale). Rest if/as needed during the session and start slow until you build up some confidence before picking up the pace.

🛏️💤 Think that nightcap helps you sleep? Think again.
Even one drink can mess with your sleep more than you think. Here’s how alcohol hijacks your sleep architecture:

🍷 You fall asleep faster, but it’s a trap.
🥱 Deep sleep increases early on, but…
😵 REM sleep (the dreamy, brain-repairing kind) gets suppressed.
🌪️ Then comes the rebound: vivid dreams, tossing, turning, and 3 a.m. wakeups.
🚽 Oh, and if it’s beer? Say hi to the bathroom at 2 a.m.

Bottom line: alcohol sedates, but it doesn’t restore.

If you want real rest, skip the nightcap and let your brain do its thing. 🧠😴
