I’m grateful to the Jewish Council of Australia for offering some language to describe the sadness and unease I’m feeling as I watch some politicians and lobbyists exploit the Bondi Chanukah massacre for political ends. This is especially uncomfortable at a time when people and communities are already so vulnerable.

The Council has invited us to stand in solidarity with Jewish people and to draw on Jewish values of tikkun olam (repairing the world) by challenging injustice and resisting attempts to turn grief into division.

I signed their petition this morning as a small, practical expression of that solidarity, and if it feels right to you, you might wish to read, sign and share it too.

Dear Nonie,

NSW Parliament - Update on Bill allowing religious bodies to deny VAD to aged care residents

Susan Carter’s Bill is still alive in NSW Parliament. Her supporters and religious groups have stepped up their campaign to undermine our voluntary assisted dying (VAD) laws.

The Bill would force aged care residents to leave their homes to access VAD. Not only is this heartless, it is a breach of aged care providers legal obligations to respect residents’ end-of-life choices.

The Bill will be debated again in the Upper House this Wednesday 19 November. It may go to a vote that day.

This Bill is an assault on the rights of the elderly. It would also embolden religious MPs in other states to seek similar laws restricting VAD for aged care residents.

We cannot allow this Bill to pass and we need your help.

MPs in the NSW Upper House must hear that our community will not accept them voting to put the rights of religious aged care operators before those of the elderly people in their care. The link to write to MPs is in my bio.

Highly recommend Lynette Wallworth’s new documentary Edge of Life, which premiered at the Adelaide Film Festival and is now screening around Australia.

It follows the work of two Australian doctors trialling psilocybin with patients nearing end of life, and weaves in a remarkable exchange of knowledge, medicines and cultural understandings of health and dying with the Yawanawa people.

In times of grief and loss, rituals help people connect with themselves, with each other, and with the healing powers of nature, love, and lineage.

Meaningful rituals can help dying people and their families navigate the difficult changes that happen at end-of-life. Death reconfigures the relationships between the living, the dying, and the dead, and rituals help our souls integrate these changes so we can move forward in the new reality.

This participatory workshop is for anyone interested in gaining more skills to support the soul’s journey through death and bereavement. Sarah will outline the foundational principles of ritual healing, and introduce rituals for different stages of the deathbed experience.

Sacred deathcare rituals are rooted in a spiritual-but-not-religious framework, and can be easily adapted to fit other spiritual or secular value systems.

Death is more than just a physical experience. It’s a transformational soul-journey, for the dying person and for those who love them.

Dominant culture primarily views death as the end of the physical body, and dying as a medical event. This approach ignores the very real, non-physical, spiritual and relational dynamics that unfold as body and soul separate.

No wonder we have trouble navigating death well: we’re operating from an incomplete map.

If we had a better map for the process of death, dying, and being dead, we could develop better practices for meeting those experiences.

In this dynamic lecture, filled with rich story-telling, Sarah offers a pragmatic soul map of death and loss that’s rooted in nature-based spirituality, modern consciousness research, and ancient wisdom traditions.

Endings are rarely easy and usually profound. They crack us open and in these new gaps we can find insight and a deepening of wisdom. But we often need help.

We don’t have to do endings alone. This is where Ending Well seeks to be a support and resource. Ending Well is founded by Nonie Wales. Nonie is passionate about connecting people with resources both inner and outer, as these help us navigate difficult and unknown territory.
