Reading is when the world goes quiet and we can get lost and connect in the world of story-telling.

International Book Day, sponsored by .international marks world recognition of the importance of story-telling and happens around the birthday of Hans Christian Andersen, who wrote fairy tales that have featured in childhoods across the globe.

Reading helps us connect with our children in a meaningful way that can help us relate to one another through the lens of imagination and magical thinking.

Often the ideas illustrated in books help us to start conversations that can otherwise feel challenging to face.

The power of wondering gives us freedom to explore the perspective of another in a way that can feel explorative and non-threatening.
We can explore the emotional world of characters that can build on our own emotional understanding of the world.
We live in a fast -paced world and reading together makes us slow down so we are thinking more than we are doing.

Reading creates a relational bridge that connects children and the adults around them, enabling them to experience adults being fully present without distraction. One of the greatest gifts we can give children…

As a Children’s author and a Child Clinical Psychologist I have spent over two decades working with kids and families. I am hugely passionate about families mental well-being. I think it is really important that we re-connect with the normal protective experience of being worried, nervous or scared.

Knowing something is normal takes away a bit of the scary and helps us know we can survive the moment to eventually get on with our day. Our brain and body is like a lighthouse always looking out to protect us. When things are new, not practiced often or are important to us the beacon of our lighthouse shines bright, which creates big sensations in our body as it is getting us ready for the possibility of scary-dangerous. When we sit in the trickiness for a little while with someone we feel safe with we begin to experience the intensity lessen a little, allowing us to begin to mobilise towards getting on with the task in front of us. My first book Even Lions get Scared aims to guide humans towards the normal sensations and emotions of fear, worry and nervousness. I think as humans we have been through a scary and unknown situation with covid that took away many opportunities to create space for growth and courage. Many of our relational safety strategies were removed and worse still labelled unsafe such as touch and connection. We are slowly making our way towards reclaiming our safe with the knowledge that courage is not in the absence of fear, but instead co-exists. This enables us to strive forward and take healthy risks that consequently helps us to re-claim our brave…

Disney has taken us back in time to show us that even the bravest of creatures feel fear when they face uncertainty…

Mufasa is the story of love, facing the unexpected, fear, loss, courage and the true meaning of connection. Through storytelling we are taken on a journey from fear towards courage and shown that finding our inner courage grows resilience, an essential ingredient to discovering our sense of belonging.
We all have a story of where we came from…this isn’t always the story of where we end up and who we end up being….in each day there are moments of potential growth that we can action in the choices we make moving forward.

Life has never been more structured and stressful. Kids are born with BIG feelings, but have limited skills in how to communicate when they feel overwhelmed. They watch and learn from the adults around them about how best to handle those moments. ALL emotions have purpose. Kids need help to know that sitting in their yucky feelings helps them to eventually find calmness again. Problem solving doesn’t happen in those moments nor does thoughtful listening. Adults need to find ways to ride the waves of kids big feelings as they swell and crash into whoever is in front of them. Emotions are like the ocean, they flow in and out, getting bigger and smaller at different points of time. Every moment creates the potential for a learning opportunity. As a parent, take a minute to breathe, notice your responses to what’s going on, think about what you want your child to learn from this moment. In times where kids feelings are explosive and unpredictable, it is helpful to remember that they have the emotional capacity and skills of a much younger child so they need the parenting response to reflect this. Parenting is definitely not easy and is full of times when we, like kids, need to be open to learning too.

“Ideas are created in moments…Courage turns them into action…”

From the moment we open our eyes we are faced with moments that can determine the course of our day and the interactions we have. A huge thank you to the nursing staff in Oncology services at Sydney Kids for handing out my books to the children who are having to find their bravery everyday. Courage lives within us all, but fear is often our default response as we try to navigate risk and the scary feelings we experience. Embracing vulnerability helps us to move towards courage, moving our creative ideas towards action. Everyone has dreams, making them reality means stepping into the unknown and believing in what you have to offer, whilst navigating the discomfort of being scared. Be bold, be brave, take good risks…2025 is a new chapter for us to step into… , , , ,

I have just watched the Paddington movie and again have been reminded of the importance of kindness and connection. Paddington embodies tolerance and humility as well as the importance of staying true to yourself. Somehow Paddington always seems to find the best in people and resonates the importance of being curious and never giving up when something is truly important. My granny used to have a magical saying: “What is for you, never goes past you…” I know I have always found it helpful whenever I have been faced with a tricky challenge or disappointment knowing that something different or better might be waiting in another moment to find me. Paddington warms my heart and I especially loved the fun I had with Scout and Paddington when I visited Paddington station last year…
