Why this matters in clinic
Treating sensitised skin like “sensitive skin” (or vice versa) can delay healing, worsen inflammation, or lead to pigment issues which is why consultation and skin analysis matter.
Sensitive Skin
A skin type something you’re usually born with or genetically predisposed to.
Key characteristics
• Reacts easily to products, climate, stress
• Prone to redness, stinging, flushing, itching
• Often associated with rosacea, eczema, dermatitis
• Naturally thinner or more reactive skin barrier
Triggers
• Fragrance, essential oils
• Temperature changes
• Active ingredients (retinoids, acids)
• Stress, hormones
Important:
Sensitive skin is usually ongoing and needs long-term barrier support, not aggressive correction.
Sensitised Skin
A temporary condition skin that has become reactive due to damage or over-treatment.
Key characteristics
• Burning or stinging where it didn’t before
• Sudden redness, tightness, irritation
• Feels raw, shiny, inflamed
• Previously “normal” skin now reacting
Common causes
• Over-exfoliation
• Too many actives at once
• Incorrect product layering
• Overdoing in-clinic treatments
• Weather, travel, illness
Important:
Sensitised skin can heal once the barrier is repaired and triggers are removed.
