The great Sufi poet Rumi says,

“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.”
This is one of my favourite quotes and without a doubt the best love advice any of us can follow.

As we approach Valentine's Day let's go beyond cheesy romantic cards, candies and flowers and drop into a reflection on the bigger LOVE that makes life worth living.

LOVE is our nature and our purest essence. We ALL want to be LOVED, we ALL deserve and are worthy of LOVE... and yet we ALL have our own set of fears, limiting beliefs or past traumas that can or has caused us to feel unworthy of love or shut it down to varying degrees.

So if you have some blocks to love, know that you're not alone!

AND you can work through these blocks, dissolve them and feel safe to open your heart!

Authentic love isn't about changing ourselves to be perfect or what someone else wants us to be. It's about learning to unconditionally love and accept ourselves just as we are... and man, that can be hard sometimes. That's why we need tools, practices and therapists!

The most powerful tools I've learned as a therapist and individual help us hold the scared and unworthy parts of ourselves with compassion.

I've been so honoured to watch many of my clients slowly learn to love and support all of the wounded and protective parts.

As they do the doors of LOVE naturally open and their lives and relationships transform.

I'll be guiding a group starting Feb 18th through my Tapping into Heart Course and The Deepening Course, a systematic approach to clear the barriers to love. Learn more below.

Sacred Circle Mentorship

If you are ready to fill your life with authentic LOVE this course is for you!

This year for Christmas our little family got the flu and it slowed us right down! Our list of adventures were quickly slashed and replaced with long afternoon naps, early bedtimes, lots of water and slow chats on the back deck with family. And guess what, it's exactly what we needed!

I've always valued the end of the year as a time to slow down and re-set…but in practice I've also found it hard to shift gears out of the busy pace of living. And that's where rituals come in.

Over the years I've tried to make a ritual of extra self care, time in nature and journaling to help myself honour the end of the year and create space to think about what's next. Needless to say this year has been harder to do that with a young baby…hence the body forcing us into it (thank you body wisdom)!

That's why I'm even more excited to be hosting my annual New Year Day Retreat in Jan where I'll be facilitating a whole day of ritual slowing down, restoring and dropping into our soul wisdom to start the year creating with heart, clarity and energy.

Imagine morning and afternoon yoga, workshops, journaling exercises, embodiment practices and sound healing all at a beautiful lake view venue.

We're on the other side of the flu now and I'm feeling even more energized and grounded from all the sleep and slowing. Such a good reminder that we often have to do a bit of pausing and purging to have the energy and presence for all the play we desire.

Wishing you a happy holiday full of time to rest and restore, and hoping you can join me in the new year for a delicious day retreat!

Don't tell me not to worry!

Have you ever had someone tell you not to worry about something and it only made you feel more anxious plus angry about not feeling understood?

Most likely that person had good intentions, but trying to ignore a concern can actually create more stress in the nervous system or unhealthy avoidant behaviors like numbing.

We all know it's almost impossible NOT to think about our worries, but what we can do is focus on HOW we're thinking about them.

Narrative therapy invites us to explore the stories we tell, either to ourselves or others, about our worries and experiences.

And the stories we tell directly influence how we feel about and respond to those worries.

Are you telling a story that's empowering and focusing on what you CAN do about the situation? Or are you telling a story that's disempowering and focusing on everything that's out of your control?

As the serenity prayer asks:
“Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

So go on, worry about it, and be discerning about HOW you're worrying so you feel empowered.

Not sure how to do that? Therapy can help reframe and re-empower you. Reach out for a free discovery call.

Family Dynamics & Unconscious Old Behaviour

I recently got back from a wonderful trip home to Colorado introducing Bodhi to my US family. On a walk with one of my brothers we were laughing about how old childhood behaviors and feelings crop up at family gatherings no matter how old we get! Anyone else relate?

From a therapist's perspective I know it’s because the conditioning we receive as young children (ages 2-7 years) leaves the strongest subconscious imprints on us.

From a human perspective I find it frustrating and disheartening that some part of me unconsciously reverts to a child when I’m back in my childhood home, even though I’ve done so much work on that part. And I know I’m not alone in this sentiment!

Even still, I know I’ve come a long way and over the years the amount that I get triggered has significantly reduced thanks to working on myself and processing childhood limiting beliefs and experiences.

The inner child work has allowed me to be a much more centered and empowered adult, and I’m endlessly inspired by the massive growth and change I see in my clients when they start to do their inner child work. I personally think it’s the most important work we do on ourselves!

But even when we do this work the inner child doesn’t die or go away. I’m starting to see how a big part of the work is actually just holding our inner child parts with deep love and acceptance. We don’t have to push them away or get rid of them to feel healed and whole.

Our inner child will always be a part of us and most likely there will always be some circumstances that trigger the inner child's fears/insecurities/coping mechanisms etc … and that’s OK. Our work is to hold that part of us compassionately and show our inner child a bigger perspective.

So this is a loving reminder to you to embrace your inner child… even if they’re acting up. ;)

If you find that hard to do, reach out, I have so many processes and techniques that can support creating a loving and compassionate relationship with your inner child.

One of my favorite places, snuggled up with my sleeping baby.

I find it so strange that this has been something I've been made to feel ashamed of and worried about as a new mother. It is the most natural, bonding and beautiful experience that calms my nervous system and tunes me in with this precious little soul.

I hope all the mammas can let their intuition lead and savor the joy of these precious and fleeting moments of connection rather than worry and feel anxious about doing it "right." I say throw out the books and podcasts and standards and trust your heart, body and baby. 🤍
