Swelling after an IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) facial rejuvenation treatment is quite common, and it usually happens for a few reasons:
1. Heat & Light Energy Reaction
• IPL uses pulses of broad-spectrum light that pe*****te the skin.
• This light is absorbed by pigment (melanin) or blood vessels, which causes controlled “micro-injury” beneath the skin’s surface.
• The body responds with an inflammatory reaction → leading to temporary swelling and redness.
2. Blood Vessel Dilation
• The heat from the light dilates blood vessels in the treated area.
• This increases circulation and fluid movement, which can show up as puffiness, especially around thinner skin like under the eyes or cheeks.
3. Skin Barrier Response
• IPL slightly disrupts the skin’s surface barrier.
• The body naturally sends fluid and white blood cells to help “repair” the area → which contributes to swelling.
4. Individual Sensitivity
• People with sensitive skin, rosacea, or more vascular skin tend to swell more.
• Also, treating larger areas, using higher energy settings, or having multiple passes can increase swelling.
✅ Normal timeline:
• Mild swelling: usually resolves within 24–72 hours.
• Redness: can last up to 2–3 days.
• Rarely, swelling can last longer if the treatment was more aggressive.
💡 Tips to reduce swelling:
• Apply cool compresses (not ice directly).
• Sleep slightly elevated the first night.
• Avoid heat, hot showers, saunas, and heavy exercise for 24–48 hours.
• Use gentle skincare and plenty of hydration.
