This Father’s Day, we’re celebrating one very special father-daughter duo at St Vincent’s - Summah-Rose and her dad, Jason.

Summah-Rose is an Aboriginal Health Practitioner, bringing specialised care to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients. Jason is a member of our Pastoral Care team, and also a heart transplant recipient of St Vincent’s, bringing both compassion and lived experience to the patients and families he supports.

Together, they show the true meaning of family, strength and dedication. Happy Father’s Day to Jason, and to all the incredible dads across our St Vincent’s family.

St Vincent’s is proud to be part of a new agreement that brings health services across Sydney together with the Aboriginal Medical Service, Redfern (AMS Redfern).

The Sydney Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Health Partnership (SMLAHP) Agreement ensures Aboriginal voices and expertise are central to the way care is planned and delivered.

Alongside AMS Redfern, the partnership includes Northern Sydney, South Eastern Sydney and Sydney Local Health Districts, Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, and St Vincent’s Health Network.

Together, we have committed to:
• Advocating for improved Aboriginal health outcomes
• Supporting better health service planning and provision
• Sharing information and data ethically to respond to local health priorities
• Upholding the highest standards of ethical research with, for, and about Aboriginal people

This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to accountability, cultural safety, and genuine partnership with Aboriginal communities – to strengthen trust, improve access, and deliver better health outcomes across our region.

Today, on Wear It Purple Day, we stand with LGBTQIA+ young people across Australia - acknowledging their right to be proud of who they are and who they are becoming.

St Vincent’s has a proud history of supporting LGBTQIA+ communities and ensuring safe, inclusive care for all. From our early leadership in caring for people living with HIV, to our continued presence at Pride events nationwide, this commitment to equity for all remains central to who we are.

Across our hospitals and services today, staff have marked the occasion with purple cupcakes stalls, information, workshops and conversations – small but powerful reminders of the importance of visibility, acceptance and support.

Last night we came together to celebrate one of the highlights of our year – the 2025 St Vincent's Sydney Staff Excellence Awards.

These awards shine a light on the extraordinary people and teams who go above and beyond every day, bringing our mission and values to life in ways that inspire us all.

This year we received more than double the number of nominations compared to last year – a true reflection of the compassion, innovation, and teamwork across our Network. Every nomination told a powerful story of dedication and care that makes St Vincent's special. Congratulations!

Today, we’re proud to launch our third Reconciliation Action Plan.

St Vincent’s has a longstanding commitment in this space - we were one of the first health and aged care organisations in Australia to launch a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) back in 2010. This new RAP builds on more than 15 years of sustained commitment to justice, truth-telling and culturally safe care. It reflects what we’ve achieved, what we’ve learned, and most importantly, what still needs to change.

Following the release of our psilocybin assisted therapy trial results, ABC News highlights the experiences of patients and families who took part - and the potential of this therapy to transform end-of-life care.

Their experiences reflect the trial’s key finding - that psychedelic-assisted therapy may deliver relief from depression and anxiety, while also enhancing quality of life, connection, and spiritual wellbeing for people living with advanced, life-limiting illness. These results highlight the potential of this therapy to transform the way we approach psychological distress in palliative care.

The results of Australia’s first ever clinical trial of psychedelic-assisted therapy have confirmed the treatment led to rapid and sustained reductions in depression and anxiety for its participants, along with improved quality of life and increased spiritual wellbeing.

The trial, undertaken by St Vincent’s clinical psychologist, Dr Margaret Ross, and psychiatrist, Dr Justin Dwyer, is the first in the world to offer psilocybin-assisted therapy to patients with non-malignant, life-threatening conditions such as motor neurone disease and advanced heart disease, as well as cancer.

The results are now published in the General Hospital Psychiatry journal, contributing to the growing body of evidence around the benefits of psychedelic-assisted therapy.

“For people facing advanced illness with few treatment options for their psychological distress, this approach offers something potentially life-changing,” Dr Ross said.

“Our study indicated that psilocybin-assisted therapy can reduce depression and anxiety but also improve quality of life, mental health and spiritual and personal wellbeing. It didn’t just reduce psychological suffering; it also promoted positive interpersonal relationships and psychological states,” said Dr Dwyer.

At just 27, Jordan was diagnosed with a rare throat cancer that threatened his ability to speak, eat and even breathe on his own.

Thanks to a world-first surgery at St Vincent’s Melbourne, using groundbreaking robotic technology and the skill of our surgical team, Jordan’s life was saved. Surgeons were able to remove the tumour with incredible precision and rebuild his throat using tissue from his thigh, preserving his voice and giving him the chance to return to everyday life.

Stories like Jordan’s show why we continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible in surgery by providing better and fairer care. Always.

At St Vincent’s Sydney, we’ve opened a new exhibition on the public hospital mezzanine, capturing the colour, connection and pride of our 2025 Mardi Gras parade float.

Through a series of vibrant images, it reflects the joy, importance, and impact of our participation - for our LGBTQ+ staff and the wider community.

Our presence at Mardi Gras stems from the advocacy of our people, ensuring St Vincent’s stands proudly for inclusion - a commitment grounded in our history. From caring for those living with HIV/AIDS in the early days of Ward 17 South to the Sisters of Charity’s legacy of justice and equity, it reflects who we are and what we stand for.

At the launch, the St Vincent’s Pride Network shared what the float - and this exhibition - means to them. The display will remain for the next month, and we invite everyone to visit, reflect, and celebrate the role inclusion plays in the health and wellbeing of our community.

At St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, our Emergency Department includes a dedicated Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drug (MHAOD) Hub - an integrated, specialist-led service providing immediate support to people in crisis.

This collaborative model brings together emergency clinicians, mental health specialists, and AOD teams to offer trauma-informed, person-centred care when it’s needed most. “We see people from all walks of life and treat everyone with respect,” says Emergency Nurse Olivia Bollington. “We listen and involve them in their care.”

The average length of stay for those attending the Hub is 40 per cent shorter than the average length of stay they would have experienced in our ED as part of the general mix of patients.

It’s part of a national St Vincent’s commitment to caring for people experiencing mental health challenges, addiction, and disadvantage - across our hospitals, outreach teams and digital services.
