The Pros of staying at home and NOT entering Residential Care.

There has been a lot of bad press lately about Nursing Homes and rightly so. A recent survey of over 75's resulted in 75% saying they would much prefer to stay at home rather than enter a Residential Care Facility.

Australia has an aging population. The eldest of the baby boomers are now in their 70’s and they face a future with dilemmas as most never wish to enter any Aged Care Facility.

Even the finest of Aged Care Facilities with all the superficial trappings of luxury do not live up to all expectations. The government admits that Home is Best and the cheapest option. This is the reasoning behind home care packages provided by the government. It is a cheaper option for the government and a far superior option for the individual.

One needs to realize that staying at Home and receiving care as required allows the individual to maintain some control over their life as well as allowing them to be relatively independent. It keeps their brain ticking over as they try to manage their circumstances however badly- it doesn’t really matter unless it’s dangerous. With a little assistance with in home care and perhaps family, any negatives are quickly mitigated. Around the Clock Care are experts in Home Care. Not only do they provide great carers, case management and advice but they are available 24/7

Entering a Residential Care Facility immediately removes regular need for shopping, meal planning and preparation, cleaning, laundry and generally maintaining a home.

Each bit of responsibility that is shed allows the person to retreat further from independence and “go downhill”

Residential care facilities provide diversions however, in-between meals and activities, care and attention tend to be very poor. Even the Facilities that outwardly appear luxurious often have poor staff ratios, poor training, poor communication and poor reaction time to the call bell. One of the biggest problems in a Residential Aged Care Facility is that there is no mandatory staffing ratios. They often operate on Agency staff leading to a breakdown in good care. There is no substitute for one to one care as available with In Home Care

Recently I visited a resident in a 5-star establishment only to find the resident in bed at 10 am. I asked them if they were feeling unwell. ” I’m fine, they just haven’t come near me to get me up.” They replied.
When I asked the staff why they had not had the time to assist the reply was that the resident had not pressed the call button. My reply to them was- “you do know she is paralyzed on one side and cannot access the bell!”

Receiving care that allows you to remain in your own home can be funded by a Consumer Directed Care Package or self-funded. Staying at home allows one to remain in familiar surroundings, maintaining independence and stay very connected to one’s immediate neighbourhood, family and friends. It allows one to live better, longer and stronger.

Around the Clock Care is a premier provider of In Home Care and always says “Good Care is the Best Medicine” especially in one’s own home

Dealing with Difficult Behaviour

Often as one ages, personality traits become magnified. An untrusting person can become paranoid and an irritable person can become angry. The target of these behaviours is often the people closest to them.

The aging process sometimes brings about anger as the elderly vent frustration brought about by chronic pain, losing friends, having memory issues, being incontinent and other things that make ageing difficult and frustrating.

Alzheimer’s disease and dementia can also cause these behaviors in which case your aged parent doesn’t have control of their behaviour. Your parent may constantly accuse you of stealing as they cannot locate misplaced items. It is useless to try and reason with them after an article is found.

As a caregiver, the best thing you can do is not take it personally. Focus on the positive, ignore the negative and take a break from care giving and find some respite. Take a short break, go for a walk or do something which gives you pleasure. Try and find someone else who can have a turn of playing carer.

Sometimes, elderly parents turn on the child that is trying so hard to take care of them and the result is abuse. Often the person giving direct care is singled out to be the cause of all their problems and they become the receiver of mental and emotional abuse, even physical abuse. As the world of the aged person becomes narrower and narrower with loss of contact with friends, lack of mobility and sense of purpose so their frustrations and fears grow and they look for someone to blame. They often not only say unkind things, but take every opportunity to tell anyone how terrible you are. It is very hard for the receiver of this abuse not to become angry and humiliated.

Finding respite for oneself may allow your parent to gain an appreciation for all that you do. If this doesn’t work you need to separate the behaviour from the person and call it an illness and appreciate the positive times you can still share
