As we observe World Autism Awareness Day, we focus on the transformative role of music therapy in fostering neurodiversity and supporting individuals with autism.
Music therapy is a versatile tool that can aid in various areas such as behaviour regulation and enhancing communication skills. It can provide a nonverbal outlet for self-expression and support emotional wellbeing. Here are some ways music therapy can be beneficial:
- Improving behaviour regulation: Music therapy can help individuals manage their emotions and behaviours. Activities like drumming circles or mindful music meditation can promote relaxation, reduce anxiety and assist in coping with sensory overload.
- Enhancing self-expression: Through songwriting, improvisation and playing instruments, individuals can express their feelings and thoughts in a supportive environment. This can lead to improved self-esteem and social skills.
As we celebrate the unique talents and perspectives of autistic individuals, letโ€™s also acknowledge the role of music therapy in creating a more inclusive society. Letโ€™s strike a chord for acceptance and understanding, not just today, but every day. ๐Ÿงฉ๐Ÿ˜•๐ŸŽตโ˜บ๏ธ

Hi, my name is Lara. I am a Registered Music Therapist (RMT) with the Australian Music Therapy Association (as off January 2024).
My area of focus is in children, adolescents and adults with various disabilities and mental health challenges, as I am passionate about assisting in making a positive difference in peopleโ€™s lives. I support each of my clients in their desire to work towards achieving their non-music related goals through creating a unique personalised music-based intervention, with individual or group sessions being held either weekly or fortnightly in a fun and welcoming environment. ๐ŸŽน๐ŸŽธ๐ŸŽค๐Ÿช‡๐Ÿช˜๐Ÿ”Š
Music Therapy is an evidence-based, person-centred allied health profession, which is recognised and well-established in many countries and clients are not required to have any musical knowledge.
If you or someone you know needs to work on developing skills in areas such as communication, increasing attention to tasks, enhancing social interactions, fine motor coordination and mood regulation, please reach out and Iโ€™d be more than happy to have a chat. ๐Ÿ˜„
