As we celebrate the arrival of Autumn, it’s important to consider the selenium levels of your stock, especially in years of good rain and lush clover growth, as extra pasture growth dilutes availability.

Without an effective selenium supplementation program, stock in affected areas can suffer serious health issues which can dramatically effect performance, and your profit.

Research has shown that offspring from deficient animals are born deficient, and offspring from supplemented animals are not deficient , so supplementing breeders not only improves your breeders production potential, but also prevents deficiency in the young animals.

A long acting selenium product, such as Selovin LA, provides a slow release of selenium over a prolonged period of time making it a safe and cost effective way to manage a selenium deficiency.

Learn how sustained selenium supplementation supports good health, productivity and profitability in cattle and sheep.

Did you know a ewe will drink up to 6L of water per day (up to 10L when lactating) when eating dry feed or stubble?

If water quality is poor, your livestock may drink less than they need, or rarely, may stop drinking altogether. When animals drink less, they will eat less and lose condition. As the body condition score of ewes at joining is a key reproduction driver, it is important they don't lose condition during this time.
It is important to check water sources regularly to see if the quantity or quality of water has changed.

When conducting water quality tests, the three main items that should be tested are pH, salinity and chloride levels.

Could selenium deficiency be impacting your profits?

Naturally occurring selenium is widely known to be lacking in many regions of Australia, yet it’s a fundamental trace element that can impact metabolism and growth, as well as the reproductive and immune systems, of sheep and cattle.

Without an effective selenium supplementation, stock in affected areas can suffer serious health issues that dramatically effect livestock performance. So understanding and managing essential selenium levels is an important profit driver.

Are your ewes lambing in the autumn?

Scanning for multiple lambs can save you money and increase return on investment. Pregnancy scanning of ewes is an important factor in managing the reproductive performance of your ewe flock. It allows you to identify the performers and passengers!

Knowing this information enables you to make more informed management decisions throughout the season such a paddock allocation and supplementary feeding requirements.

Don’t let a good season influence your decision to scan for multiples or not. Scanning for multiples enables better management of condition score, in return driving the reproductive performance of your flock. Differential management ensures:
- Single ewes are not over fed. This is more important is good seasons! Overweight ewes can lead to lambing difficulties.
- Ewes bearing twins can be fed to meet their higher nutritional demands.
- Dry ewes can be separated and either sold, re-joined or placed on low value pasture to suit their lower energy requirements.

Is your herd protected against buffalo flies?

Buffalo flies are a prevalent parasite in northern Australia. With the recent rain and rising soil temperatures, perfect conditions are being created for populations to increase. Buffalo flies cause severe irritation to cattle resulting in disrupted grazing time and reducing hide value. They can also spread diseases such as pinkeye and cause lesions around the eyes and body of cattle, resulting in serious welfare and productivity concerns.

When fly pressure is high, insecticidal ear tags can be effective for prolonged protection.

For further information on strategic buffalo fly management and control programs, contact us on our toll-free number 1800 678 368 or visit growsolutions.elanco.com/livestock-advice/cattle/buffalo-fly-management.

Why it is important to know the condition score of your ewes - even in good seasons

In many regions across Australia this year, ewes are carrying good condition. No matter the season getting your hands on the sheep is the only way to truly understand the ewes condition score.

How to manage +3.0 BCS ewes in the lead up to joining?

You have done all the hard work! So, the key is to avoid ewes losing condition in the lead up to and during joining. This can happen due to rainfall impacting dry spring feed or a green flush causing ewes to slip in condition. No matter how heavily conditioned ewes are, they should be in positive energy balance in the lead up to joining and condition loss should be avoided during joining. This is sometimes more easily said than done when ewes are carrying lots of condition!
