ADAM17, also known as TNF-α converting enzyme (TACE), is a transmembrane protein and enzyme that plays a critical role in shedding cell-surface proteins and regulating a wide range of biological processes like inflammation, immunity, and tissue regeneration. It cleaves and releases proteins such as cytokines (like TNF-α), receptors, growth factors, and adhesion molecules, which can alter cellular signaling and function. Due to its broad involvement, ADAM17 is considered a potential therapeutic target for diseases involving inflammation and cancer, although its crucial role in development and tissue repair requires careful consideration for any therapeutic strategy.
