The most rewarding part of my job is seeing students succeed and acheive the goals they set out to work hard for.

Not all of them are working in the fitness industry. Some have overcome serious injury, competed in various competitions or hiked huge mountains. Some are using their knowledge and skills in other industries. Wherever you are and whatever you are doing know that I am here cheering you on.

A student of mine learnt a valuable lesson and a new skill today. They included an exercise in their programs that they had no idea what it actually was (ie. chatgpt probably assisted them in writing the program).

So, today we did that exercise - that exercise being nordic curls. You can have a look online if you are not familiar with this exercise, but those who are familiar will know that its no mean feat to complete a few a sets of these. With two others giggling and filming in the background, this student stepped up to the challenge.

I often get asked if technology will take over the fitness industry and make trainers or instructors obsolete.

Technology can write a perfect program and have it customised to you. However, it cannot deliver the program. It cant coach the exercise to be customised for the client and factor in things like biomechanics, injuries or even take on board the feedback like a trainer can. Technology wont keep you motivated and connect with you like a trainer can.

I have never been worried about technology taking over or taking away my job. Great trainers hone their craft and invest in learning skills that technology cannot deliver.

Today students are learning how mind health impacts on performance.

A great trainer should be able to help you set goals, talk positively about yourself and put the right amount of pressure on you when training to get the best out of you.

Are you looking after your mind health? Does your trainer positively impact you in these areas?

The last unit of this term my students are learning about barriers to exercise. As a mum, business owner and someone who works part time, I understand barriers are very real.

What are your barriers? Are you using them as an excuse? Something is better than nothing and you can only control what is within your control.

This 6 week challenge was exactly that - a chance to prove to myself I could meet a daily step count and that I could overcome any obstacle. I had many legitimate reasons not to do what I said I would but I didn’t use them as excuses. Im proud of myself and my buddy as we both topped the leaderboard alongside another pair - both with children at home. 💪🏻🙌🏻 Thanks for the opportunity to grow and learn, and make another friend.

I guess 18 years of industry experience is now paying off. I spend my days food prepping puree and rusks, teaching my daughter how to move and facilitating how active she is, encouraging her to drink water and helping her have good sleep health.

I'm hoping that we will set a positive example and set her up for a healthy and active lifestyle.

A good group fitness instructor or personal trainer should always give options, and shouldn’t make you feel bad for taking those options if you need to.

Today, I participated in my first group fitness class in over a year. As you can imagine, Im basically a beginner in terms of fitness and ability, but also have quite a few considerations with my training.

Lucky I know what the options are. However the instructor did not offer any options and made me feel a bit silly for taking some of these. I feel bad for new participants or those who need these options when this happens. It creates a bad experience when they miss out on a great workout and are likely never to return.

I want to encourage you that options are ok. I always make options ok. Its YOUR workout, not the instructors. Listen to your body and dont feel pressured to do something that you cant or shouldnt.

I often get asked why I as a fitness professional would have a trainer. The answer is the same as why anyone else would have one - it keeps me accountable is the main reason.

Other reasons include me not having to think about my workouts (this is one thing I like about group classes), I have someone who can monitor and customise my workout, and push me a little harder than I might push myself. Plus, my trainer knows more than I do so it's a fantastic learning opportunity for me.

Particularly at the moment, I am navigating my way through a huge lifestyle change. Its hard and many times I would much rather sleep than exercise. I'm as human as the next person.

Not everyone is able to have a trainer, but even having an accountability partner that you train with or contact regularly. Keep records of your exercise, sleep and nutrition and keep yourself accountable.
