Throwback Thursday time.

Just one year after opening, Northcott had registered over 1000 children living with conditions such as polio, tuberculosis and clubfoot. Many of these children had previously received no care at all.

In 1930 alone, 27 free clinics were held in Sydney Hospital, offering diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care from specialist orthopaedic surgeons.

Northcott covered all costs, from transportation for the children who could not travel, medical equipment, follow-up visits and casework support. Families who lived in isolation now found themselves connected to a network of people committed to their child’s wellbeing.

After years without the right supports children took their first steps, gained independence and were able to return to school. Stories like these drove public support and positioned Northcott as vital in the care of children with disability.

"It feels really good to have a voice that's actually being heard and we can actually get something done — to prevent sexual violence in disability and in relationships."

Dale Ryan recently talked with SBS News about Northcott's new Love Rights project, which offers free online learning resources covering topics like consent, recognising the early signs of abuse, healthy relationships and human rights.

According to a 2021 Disability Royal Commission report, more than 60 per cent of Australians with disability had experienced physical, social, intimate partner violence or emotional abuse.

Dale says this project is important because "we are equal to everybody else, [and] we deserve to have the same rights as everybody else."

A new online learning module is aiming to provide education and support around intimacy rights for people with disability.

As the new year begins, we’re reflecting on how Northcott has supported children from the very start.

Almost 100 years ago in December 1929, something remarkable happened at Sydney Town Hall: A room full of members of the Sydney Rotary Club, community leaders, families and supporters gathered to launch what would become one of Australia’s longest continuing disability organisations.

Their mission was ambitious, wanting to ensure that every child with a physical disability could access the best possible treatment and training, regardless of circumstance.

The New South Wales Society for Crippled Children, now known as Northcott, was born.

At a time when children with physical disabilities were hidden away, denied schooling or dismissed as incurable, this was a radical shift in thinking.

From our very foundation to present day, Northcott has championed a vision of inclusion, dignity, potential and independence. Our work began with the unwavering belief that children with disability deserve not only care, but opportunity.
