Last week, we acknowledged International Nurses Day and the extraordinary contribution of nurses and clinical staff across our clinic.

At Sydney Breast Clinic, compassionate care is at the centre of every patient experience. From the moment a patient walks through our doors, our nursing and clinical teams provide reassurance, guidance, and personalised support during what can often be an overwhelming and emotional time.

As a diagnostic clinic, we understand that for some patients, an appointment may mark the beginning of a much larger journey. Whether offering a listening ear, helping patients navigate next steps after a diagnosis, or ensuring each individual feels informed and supported, our nurses play an invaluable role in delivering care that is deeply personal.

We are incredibly grateful for the dedication, empathy, and expertise our nurses and clinical staff bring to patients each and every day.

Sydney Breast Clinic has been providing and promoting preventative healthcare for people of all ages for over 45 years. It is important not to disregard your breast health because you think you are not "old enough". Read through the following statistics to understand why proactive breast care is necessary even if you are under 40:

- In Australia, breast cancer is the most common cancer for women aged 20-39
1000 women under 40 are diagnosed each year - that's 3 women every day!
- Long standing Myth that Breast Cancer only affects older women
- Breast Cancer diagnosis in women under 50 has been rising more than 2% annually in the past 5 years
- Women under 40 are nearly 40% more likely to die from their breast cancer than women over 40
- Younger women are more likely to have aggressive forms of breast cancer
- Younger women are more likely to have genetic risk factors for breast cancer (BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes)

Did you know Sydney Breast Clinic offers DEXA Scans?

DEXA Scans measure an individual's Bone Mineral Density, most commonly to help diagnose or manage Osteoporosis - a common condition characterised by weak and fragile bones.

Many women, especially those that have undergone breast cancer treatment or are menopausal, have an elevated risk of developing Osteoporosis due to the disruption to natural estrogen levels.

If you would like your bone density read with results sent back to your GP, either alone or during your SBC breast check appointment, contact us with your referral.

We asked our amazing Breast Physician Dr Fiona Long - What are the most common misconceptions you come across about Breast Cancer? Here is what she said:

"There are two common misconceptions that I frequently encounter.

Firstly, there's the belief among young women that they are too young to be at risk. On the other end, older women may mistakenly think their risk diminishes after the age of 74, which is false. It's crucial to re-inform and re-educate individuals on the importance of ongoing assessments.

Additionally, there's a misconception that women aged 40-50 are not old enough for breast screening, despite a definite increase in breast cancer cases among younger women." - Dr Fiona Long, Breast Physician, Sydney Breast Clinic

Regardless of your age, it is crucial everyone knows their normal. It is the only way to empower yourself to detect changes early. If you are under the age of 40 and would like an affordable, education breast check, contact us.

It is a scary but true fact. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among all women in Australia, and second only to prostate cancer in the entire population.

Keep up with your regular breast screening, and check your own breasts in the interim to ensure any changes are detected early.

Early detection is the best tool we have.
