There are myriad types of ladders. Why? Because accessing areas off the ground via a ladder is never as simple as just "climb the ladder".

Our fifth most popular post from 2025, "What are the main types of ladders?" explores the different variations of ladder you might come across. It also discusses why you might choose one over another depending on the work environment.

It's the start of a new year, and there is a lot to look forward to over the next 12 months.

But while we are all warming our engines back up, after what we hope was a pleasant break, we thought we would look back on the year that was.

Our website is home to an ever-growing trove of information about working at heights as well as safety more generally.

Each year, our team adds over 30 new posts to the collection, making sure that we are providing the most up-to-date, relevant and accurate information to better protect people.

And while believe every page and every post is equally important, it is interesting to look back and see which posts have been read most often.

So we thought we'd countdown the 10 most read posts from our website from last year.

Number 10: Dangers of suspension trauma and how to avoid it.

Number 9: Oxygen and confined spaces

Number 8: Ladder cages and vertical ladder lines: what and why

Number 7: AS/NZS 1891.4:2025 in detail

There is a lot that goes on inside a datacentre. It might not look it, with the endless rows of blinking lights and whirring of fans. But all your Netflix needs to get from the internet to your television somehow.

Connecting all those servers to the internet requires all manner of cabling and ducting, which can make getting in and around a datacentre a complicated business.

Over the years, HSE has worked with a number of builders and operators to design and install fall protection systems for the inside (and outside) of datacentres.

In this recent project, our team utilised Kattsafe Australia software to design and then install a custom series of steps, ladders and platforms to allow workers access up and over trays of cables and other electronic components.

This will allow workers safe access to perform maintenance and repair work. So that you don't miss an episode of your favourite show.

Fall protection systems are always designed to suit the specific needs of the environment where it is gong to be used.

But there are some common ideas that you will find shared across sites.

On the HSE blog this week, our team looks at some of the more common parts of a fall protection you are likely to come across., And we explain why it is like this.

The need to access solar panels is one of the big reasons why safe roof access might be needed when it otherwise has not. Another common reason is that your building refurbishment includes the addition of many skylights that you would like to keep clean.

These combined at this medical centre in Lidcombe, NSW, where the HSE team designed and installed a combination static line, access ladder and roof anchor point system to provide compliant, safe access to the whole roof area.

Just a reminder that over the holiday period the HSE office will be closed and our team will be off putting their feet up.

We'll be finishing up on Monday, 22 December. But we'll be back on deck from Wednesday, 7 January all bright-eyed and busy-tailed ready to throw ourselves into the new year.

Summer. A time for fun in the sun, days on the beach, and remembering to stay safe while at work.

While the warmer weather can be pleasant, it can also introduce a number of safety risks that need to be considered, especially if you are working outdoors and on roofs.

Here are a couple of top tips you should keep in mind to make sure your time in the sun stays fun: https://heightsafety.net/news/how-to-stay-safe-in-summer-when-working-at-heights/

What is a diversion anchor? How do I re-anchor my fall protection system?

While these questions have been around forever, the updates in AS/NZS 1891.4:2025 now mean that workers must be aware of how these questions can be answered.

To help, the experts at HSE have put together this explainer that runs through how it all works and what you need to know.

You can read it here: https://heightsafety.net/news/diversion-anchors-and-re-anchoring-techniques/

Height Safety Engineers were pleased we could play a small role in the development of Cabravale Club Resort for the Warden Group.

Over a lot of this year, our teams have been working hard on getting all the fall protection the site needed installed.

The scope of this project required our team to utilise all the tools they have to to find the right safety system for each area that needed accessing.

In the end, we have installed roof anchor points, static lines, guardrails, walkways, plant platforms, ladders and stairs. There is probably one of at least everything you could use in a fall protection system installed here.

But complex, long-term projects like this are just another day for our expert team. Pulling together the best solution for each access and height safety issue is what we do.

We were excited to see the club reopen its doors recently, and look forward to checking it out ourselves before too long.

How near a miss must a near miss miss so the near miss is not missed?

Near misses are a warning sign that a safety system or procedure might not be working as intended.

Having the skills to identify a near miss, and building a culture where reporting them is encouraged will go a long way to improving your workplace's safety outcomes.
