What do we know about Mental Health?
Mental health is an expression that we use every day, but it might surprise you that the term ‘mental health’ is frequently misunderstood.
According to the World Health Organization, however, mental health is “a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”
Mental health conditions can cause distress, impact on day-to-day functioning and relationships, and are associated with poor physical health and premature death from su***de.
Every year, about 1 in 5 Australians will experience a mental health condition of some form.
In a recent national health survey of mental health, it was found that more women (11.6%) were diagnosed with depression than men (9.1%) and almost 1 in 7 women in Australia report experiencing an anxiety-related condition. This represents about 15% within the past 3 years.
However, if you feel that you may be affected by depression or anxiety remember they are treatable conditions and effective treatments are available. The earlier you seek support, the better.
