There is no perfect program, however there are logical decisions required to reduce the risk of inappropriate prescription.

When programming for a large group there needs to be consistency in the way we measure capacity upon which we can prescribe intensity. The variables of volume and rest are consistent across the group, and even though the % is set, this intensity will be relative to your capacity.

Maximal Aerobic Speed (MAS) traditionally is a running based test for team field based sports. However the physiological response to completing a set distance for time (time trial) remains the same if completed on your erg of choice.

At the end of the day it's a measure, not a training method.

The measure offers a base off which we can prescribe intensity which is relevant to the individual. It’s the equivalent to testing a 1RM lift and then programming off this number to eventually improve it.

Keep in mind - your MAS is specific to the modality tested (eg if tested on a run, then your MAS% is relevant to running - it won’t equate to your row, bike or ski.) This just means, MAS is modality specific.

In a nutshell, your MAS is your average pace over the course of a time trial. You may have been able to hold a faster pace at some point during the TT, whether your plan was a positive or negative split, or just realised you went out too hot and made alterations to your pace in order to complete the TT as best as you could. During your program, you may find you could work harder, or that your original TT pace could have been quicker and therefore your training intensity may not be accurate. Well I truly hope so, but what’s interesting is that your performance gains might have just come down to greater awareness of how to pace, technical efficiency on the erg, a greater understanding of how the damper setting and cadence have a huge impact on your overall performance - what you have discovered is Economy (it’s working smarter, not harder - that has improved your performance).

If needed, we can alter your pace throughout the program - otherwise, enjoy the progress, hold the course and by the time the next TT comes around, you might just surprise yourself.
