Celebrate and uplift an up-and-coming leader by nominating them for a 2026 Levinia Crooks Emerging Leader Award! 🏆️🎉

This year’s focus on basic science highlights the essential role of basic scientists, whose work provides the foundation for every biomedical advancement in prevention, testing and treatment. The work of basic scientists is also fundamental in informing programming, supporting communities and the workforce. Hosting the HIV&AIDS + ASRH conferences in Melbourne, a basic science hub, provides us with a great opportunity to highlight and recognise the work of emerging leaders in this important field.

Nominations are open now and close on Thursday 4 June 2026.

Nomination is open to all and is not restricted by an active ASHM membership. Nominations are assessed by a panel of adjudicators to determine a winner. ASHM will notify the winner by 7 July 2026.

In 2021, Australia recorded zero cervical cancer cases in people under 25 for the first time since data collection began in 1982 - a milestone driven by the success of the HPV vaccine. But with vaccination and cervical screening rates now declining, continued progress isn’t guaranteed.

As a result, it is more important than ever for GPs to educate patients on the important role screening and vaccines play in the prevention of cervical cancer.

ASHM is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of His Excellency Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, former President of Fiji and champion for the HIV response. His commitment to supporting communities affected by HIV was unwavering, and he will be greatly missed.

Earlier this year, Ratu Epeli opened ASHM’s Prescriber and Training of Trainers program in Fiji. He stayed for the entire day, and took the time to meet with each of our team and thank them personally. His warmth, humility and genuine commitment will be remembered, and ASHM remains very grateful for the support he showed for our work in the region.

This year marks 10 years of the U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable) campaign! 🎉💜

Grounded in decades of scientific research, U=U means that people living with HIV who are on effective treatment and maintain an undetectable viral load cannot sexually transmit HIV.

For a decade, the message behind U=U has transformed prevention and helped change the global conversation about HIV - with over 1000 organisations in more than 100 countries supporting the campaign!

While uncommon in the general population, the incidence of a**l squamous cell carcinoma is increasing. Certain groups, including people living with HIV, are disproportionately affected.

Released last year, Australia’s first national A**l Cancer Screening Guidelines for People Living with HIV are designed to support clinicians working with people living with HIV to understand when and how to screen for a**l cancer.

We all have a role to play in putting syphilis back on the radar, and Melbourne based GP Dr Karen Frielich is helping us spread the message.

Any GP can provide STI testing, including syphilis testing. With a no wrong door approach, patients should be able to access testing wherever they engage with the health system.

Syphilis notifications continue to rise across Australia, affecting people across all communities. Many cases present without symptoms, making routine testing a crucial part of providing comprehensive sexual health care.

As clinicians, you play a central role in early detection and prevention. Incorporating regular syphilis testing into care for sexually active patients can help reduce missed diagnoses and support better health outcomes.

Putting syphilis on the radar starts with all of us.

Thank you to everyone who joined us today on Gadigal Land (Sydney) for the Second National Congenital Syphilis Roundtable, convened by NACCHO Aboriginal Health Australia and ASHM.

The roundtable brought together leaders from across health, community, and policy sectors for a day of cross-sector collaboration and knowledge-sharing. Together, we developed tangible, achievable actions to strengthen the national response and accelerate progress towards eliminating congenital syphilis in Australia.

We look forward to continuing this critically important work and progressing the priority actions identified through the roundtable in the coming months.

If Michelle could only eat one cuisine forever, she’s choosing Thai — no hesitation!🍜

And if she could travel anywhere in the world, she would want to go trekking straight into the heart of the Amazon rainforest🌴

From global programs to daydreaming about adventuring in the Amazon, we love the spark Michelle brings to ASHM!✨
