✨ EVERY WEEK COUNTS AWARD FOR HORNSBY ✨

Hornsby Hospital’s neonatal special care nursery was recently recognised at the Every Week Counts national launch in Brisbane for its work to reduce preterm and early term births in low-risk women.

The collaboration with Royal North Shore, Northern Beaches and Gosford hospitals is part of a national trial focused on improving outcomes for babies by preventing births before 39 weeks where safe and appropriate.

Led by Associate Professor Ajay Vatsayan, the Hornsby team has been working closely with other sites to share strategies, improve care, and support better health outcomes for newborns and their families.

Findings from the trial will inform future care across Northern Sydney Local Health District and beyond.

World Hand Hygiene Day 2025 celebrated across NSLHD

NSLHD marked World Hand Hygiene Day with events across our hospitals and services, led by the infection prevention and control (IPAC) team.

This year’s theme, “It might be gloves. It’s always hand hygiene,” served as a strong reminder of the importance of good hand hygiene in all clinical settings.

Royal North Shore Hospital hosted skin hydration checks, games, and a special jingle performance by the RNSH Child Care Centre Choir. At Macquarie Hospital, staff enjoyed outdoor activities, coffee and doughnuts. Hornsby ran roving bingo and quizzes, and Ryde Hospital and Northern Beaches Community Mental Health Services also joined in with a range of engaging activities.

Clinical Nurse Consultant Mae Sia summed it up perfectly:
“Hand hygiene is one of the simplest yet most powerful precautions we can take to protect our patients, our colleagues, and ourselves.”

Thank you to our IPAC team, IPAC champions, sponsors and staff for bringing the message to life.

🏥 NSW HEALTH SECRETARY VISITS HORNSBY HOSPITAL 🏥

Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital staff welcomed a special visitor recently — New South Wales Health Secretary Susan Pearce AM.

Susan toured the hospital, visiting departments including the emergency department, renal dialysis, chemotherapy unit, rehabilitation wards and the Pamela Margaret Andrews Simulation Centre.

She took time to speak with patients, nurses, doctors, allied health clinicians and support services staff throughout the visit.

Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital General Manager Simon Hill said staff were proud to showcase their work and grateful for Susan’s kind words.

“It was great to show her around our fabulous hospital and our staff and volunteers really appreciated Susan’s heart-warming feedback on the outstanding jobs they do caring for our community,” he said.

🐾 A TWO-HOUR NAP IS ALL PART OF THE JOB 🐾

Meet Fran – a golden retriever and proud member of the allied health team!

She may love carrots, belly rubs and midday naps, but Fran is making a real impact as part of the Animal Assisted Therapy Model of Care.

Working three days a week, Fran helps break down barriers for patients experiencing low mood, anxiety or social withdrawal – encouraging engagement, building trust, and lighting up faces.

Occupational Therapy Team Manager Alex Kelly said it best:
🗨️ “It’s wonderful when I see a consumer who usually doesn’t smile light up when they see Fran.”

From flunked guide dog to healthcare hero, Fran is helping patients open up, connect with clinicians, and take steps forward in their recovery – all with a wagging tail. 🐾🧠💙
