“The prevalence of eating disorder behaviours is rising faster in men than in women so we will catch up eventually,” says Dr Griffiths

According to the Butterfly Foundation, more than 360,000 Australian men are living with an eating disorder.

This situation desperately needs to change.

"Patients can access Medicare rebates for up to 10 sessions of psychological therapy per year under a Mental Health Treatment Plan, and five sessions with a dietician under the separate Chronic Disease Management Plan. But the best available evidence shows a patient with bulimia who begins treatment early needs a minimum of 20 psychological and 10 dietetic sessions per year. A patient with anorexia nervosa or an eating disorder with complications of comorbid conditions, including depression and anxiety, need a minimum of 50 psychological and 20 dietetic sessions per year."

Fiona had to choose between affording the treatment that would teach her how to eat, or buying food.

"When you diet, you are trying to make changes from a place of body hatred. This year, why not work on making changes from a place of body respect and acceptance?
Embrace new habits that are good for whole-body health regardless of whether they lead to a change in weight."

Already finding it hard to stick to your restrictive New Years Resolutions? Ditch them for something else instead.

Happy 2018 everyone!
This is a great article if you are still considering making New Year's resolutions:

Every new year we set about making resolutions related to our physical health: going on a diet, joining a gym or drinking less. But what about our mental health?

This: "For so many people "tips and tricks" can nosedive into disaster, and we have a responsibility to the nearly 1 million Australians with eating disorders to promote a culture of mindfulness and moderation this holiday season, instead of fuelling disordered eating under the guise of health."

If we allow ourselves to be consumed by diet culture, we run the risk of missing out on those meaningful moments around us.

We need to stop treating health as a purely physical thing and take into consideration whole-person health - including psychological, emotional and spiritual health as well as physical.

"In Olds' opinion, the potential stresses associated with body loathing are much more harmful than someone who is carrying a bit of extra weight but is otherwise fit and healthy."

The short answer? No.

Orthorexia is something that we are seeing more and more of in our clinic:

"I was hitting my daily recommended intake of fruit and vegetables, ensuring a more than adequate amount of protein and hitting those calcium targets. Yet, I was obsessed. Obsessed with tracking every morsel of food that went into my mouth, and avoiding so called 'toxic' and 'harmful' food products. I was obsessed with clean eating."

As my diet became more and more restrictive, my body shrunk and so did my world.

This is a big part of the work we do with clients at Shape Your Mind: helping them to relearn how to tune in and respond to signals of hunger and satiety.

The most helpful healthy-eating tool I know is not about what or what not to eat - it's about tapping into how hungry or full you feel.

Let's just stop commenting on other people's bodies. I was having a conversation with girlfriends just the other day about all the insulting comments that have been made to us over the years about our bodies and appearance. It has to stop.

The trending hashtag has become a stream of the crap things people have said about women's bodies.

Our understanding of eating disorders is slowly improving but there are still so many misconceptions.

"Anorexia nervosa has the highest rate of death of any mental illness. Rates of su***de among those with an eating disorder – anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder – are up to 31 times higher than the general population."

I noticed Raia as soon as she came to Ravenswood in year 9.

"All because I kept being told by society, and myself, that I was too fat and had to "do something about it", because being 20kg overweight in a society that glorifies thin as the ideal means that I am clearly evil and it's all my own fault."

Oh, have you tried eating more meat and less carbs? You should just eat according to your blood type. Calories in, calories out; that's the only way. Have you tried the latest juice detox?

Body image is a significant issue for men too:

I dated a guy once who used the sort of language I was only ever used to hearing women use about their bodies.
