Happy 40th Birthday Self Advocacy Sydney! πŸŽ‰

A message from our CEO, Maria Katrivesis:
This year we celebrate 40 years of supporting each other to speak up, know our rights and become Self Advocates!

We reflect on four decades of advancing the rights, inclusion, and self advocacy of people with intellectual disability.

Over the next year we will be honouring and celebrating the achievements of people with intellectual disability and Self Advocacy Sydney.

We will do this by:
β€’ celebrating the exceptional work of our Board and staff
β€’ sharing stories from SAS’ history
β€’ talking to people who helped make SAS the organisation it is today.

Thank you to everyone who has supported SAS throughout the last 40 years.
Here’s to 40 more!

80 organisations went to Canberra to speak to politicians about climate change.

Renew Australia For All organised meetings with 46 politicians on Wednesday 16 March 2026.

Self Advocacy Sydney was part of the group.

We spoke to politicians about how climate change affects people with intellectual disability living in Western Sydney.

We shared the experiences about climate change from our peer support sessions.

We also spoke about changes to advocacy.

This could make it harder for people to speak up.

We were listened to and supported.

Speaking up is very important

It helps make change.

Thank you to Renew Australia for All.

During our last Plot Play session, we were joined by Liesl Tesch MP

Liesl Tesch is the NSW State Member of Parliament for Gosford.

Liesl spent time getting to know everyone and learning about Plot Play.

We wrote and shared fun stories together.

The theme for the stories was β€œThe Elements”.

We used ideas like:

β€’ hot air balloons
β€’ big water bubbles
β€’ fireworks
β€’ flowers

Everyone also wrote a letter to Liesl.

We said thank you and shared kind messages about her work in the Gosford community.

Plot Play is a free program for people with disability to write and share stories with one another.

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination was created by the United Nations to raise awareness and encourage global action against racism.

This week people have been celebrating Harmony Day, but we feel it is important to extend the conversation to talk about the racial discrimination and inequality still experienced by many people today.

We still have a long way to go in the fight against racism and discrimination.
Self Advocacy Sydney stands up for equality, justice and dignity for everyone.
