From 1997 to 2020 there were at least 1,600 veteran su***des. The projected estimate of veteran su***des up to 2023, based on past years’ data, is 1,810.

This Anzac Day, to raise awareness for veteran mental health, veteran soldier Keshia Westdorp will be completing 1,810 push ups – one for every veteran su***de between 1997 and 2023. Keshia will also pledge her brain for donation to the Australian Veterans’ Brain Bank, part of Sydney Local Health District and is encouraging other veterans to consider doing the same. The Brain Bank is dedicated to researching disorders of the brain in Australian Defence Force Veterans and increasing understanding of head trauma in military settings so they can be better diagnosed, prevented and treated.

The event will be livestreamed from U-Fit 24/7 Arana Hills, Queensland, a major event sponsor.

All proceeds will go directly to the Australian Veterans’ Brain Bank.

Australian Defence Force veterans and members of the Penrith RSL Sub-Branch attended an education session on mental wellbeing at the National Centre for Veterans’ Healthcare (NCVH).

The NCVH is an outpatient service of Concord Hospital and provides care to current and ex-serving Australian Defence Force members to help to achieve optimal mental and physical wellbeing.

The session was held during Veterans’ Health Week, 8-15 October, which this year has the theme ‘Mental Wellness Matters’.

Attendees heard from the NCVH’s diversional therapist, social worker and psychiatry registrar, whose presentations focused on pathways to mental wellbeing.

The event was funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Veterans’ Affairs and supported by Kirribilli RSL Sub-Branch.

“Promoting better mental health is a priority at the Centre so we want our veterans to be aware of the supports that are available to them,” said Rebecca McFarlane, Case Manager at the NCVH.

“Thank you to those who took part and to our team members who led the session.”

NCVH Clinical Operations Manager Kirsty Chapman and NCVH RSL Liaison Officer Bronte Pollard have been visiting the Riverina this week, attending the Wagga Wagga ADF Transition Day and The Riverina Veterans Wellbeing Centre veterans drop in event. It was a great opportunity to meet both current and ex-serving Defence members and spread knowledge of the service. It was also an opportunity to meet and develop links to ADF and veterans resources, services and organisations to improve collaboration across veteran services.

Each year Anzac Day is observed on April 25. This special day commemorates the alliance formed between armed forces of Australia and New Zealand during the First World War. Anzac Day is a day to gather to honour all those who have served, and continue to serve, in Australia’s armed forces and remember those men and women who have given their lives for the freedoms that we enjoy today. Today, we reflect on their sacrifice. Lest we forget.

National Centre for Veterans’ Healthcare

Concord Hospital has a proud history of serving Australia’s veterans since 1941. Through recognition of the nationwide need for the provision of better care for veterans, the National Centre for Veterans’ Healthcare (NCVH) was developed.

The Centre identifies a veteran as any current or past serving Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel with at least one day of active service, whether deployed on active combat or peacekeeping. Those who have not deployed, and reservists, are also considered veterans.

The Centre is an outpatient service of Concord Hospital. We aim to provide world-class care to Australia’s veterans to help to achieve optimal mental and physical wellbeing through an integrated healthcare model. Our clinicians work closely with the patient and their family and carers in all aspects of their treatment planning and goal setting.

The Centre will be the first Australian service to combine specialities to meet the complex needs of the Australian veteran community. Our specialist team includes psychology, psychiatry, pain, drug health, rehabilitation medicine, physiotherapy, exercise physiology, dietetics, occupational therapy, diversional therapy, social work and peer support.
