Starting the school year can be stressful when your child has a stoma.
It’s normal to feel unsure about what to tell teachers, and how much is too much.
The good news? You don’t have to share everything. Just the essentials that help your child feel safe, supported, and included. 🧒🏫 📝
When teachers and staff know about your child’s stoma, they can:
✅ Allow flexible bathroom breaks
✅ Respect your child’s need for privacy
✅ Recognise signs of distress or discomfort
✅ Respond confidently in emergencies
👩🏫 What to share:
- Your child has a stoma
- They may need extra bathroom access
- Key signs to watch for
- Emergency contact info
- Any special dietary or hydration needs
- Request for privacy and respectful communication
📌 Bring a short note or a “stoma passport” to meetings. Keep it simple and practical.
Involve your child when they’re ready, and practice how they want to respond to classmates’ questions.
🧡 Most importantly: Share only what’s needed. Protect your child’s comfort and privacy. Advocate with calm confidence.
Have you had to talk to a school about your child’s stoma? What helped the conversation go well?
