Drinking alcohol is a personal choice, and I do drink in moderation.
Understanding how alcohol works in our body and how to structure our eating and hydration around drinking alcohol can help us counteract some of the detrimental effects.
Alcohol usually drops our blood sugar.
This is because our liver is making some background glucose all of the time. When we have alcohol onboard it stops this and processes the alcohol.
Then we often get an intense desire to eat when drinking or the day after drinking alcohol.
My top tips when drinking:
🍸Choose low carb drinks, like dry white, red or sparkling wine or spirits with soda water or diet mixes.
🍸Hydrate with water and electrolytes. I personally love LMNT. *Do not take these if you’re on medications that require you to watch your potassium intake
🍸Eat something high in protein before drinking, so hunger doesn’t take over. Aim for eggs or a cheese plate with cheeses, olives, nuts, veggies and dips.
🍸Eat extra protein the morning after, so you’re not snacking all day.
