‘I feel so out of place in this new job…

This is should be my dream job! I found an amazing role in a great company and I'm working with a wonderful team. But this industry is so new to me, I’m struggling to keep up and to understand what I’ve got myself into. I have a similar background but, I’m just struggling, I feel out of place…’

Sound familiar?

Imposter syndrome is quite common particularly when you are starting a new job. Self-doubt, underperformance and lack of progression are signs of imposter syndrome. Whilst it feels difficult to move through it is important to address how you are feeling, obtain feedback where you can and check in with those closest to you especially if you are going through a hard time.

The good news is that you can work through imposter syndrome, the below is a great article from seek which illustrates common signs of imposter syndrome and what you can do about it.

Are you happy at work?
Have you tried to fix the problem?
Is leaving the only solution?

Upon my research this week, I discovered the below article from Seek, I was alarmed to find out that only 50% of Gen Z employees are happy at work and that the numbers between generations are around the 50%-60% mark.

What could cause this?

- It is critical when job hunting to ask your new employer the right questions in an interview. Ask questions about the new team you will be working with, or what your hiring manager will expect from you.
- Take the time to identify your list of pros and cons about your current job before you consider leaving your current the organization. It could simply be a bad day or perhaps underline problems have been present for a while.
- Be crystal clear in what work is right for you. When you have clarity on what your ideal job is, then you shouldn’t be unhappy at work because it should be aligned to your purpose and values.

Remember, you will spend about a third of your life working, if you are not happy where you then the time is right now to actively do something about it.
