Good afternoon,
Our staff members is currently completing her Psychology Honours Thesis Project. Her research looks at the existence of a “Rescue Personality” as coined by Ex-Firefighter and Paramedic, Jeffrey Mitchell, and whether this has links to resilience and job satisfaction.

You are invited to participate in an anonymous online survey that may take approximately 5 – 10 minutes. Anyone is welcome to complete this, however the researcher is particularly seeking ex or currently serving Military (including but not limited to Air Force, Navy, Army), Emergency First Responders (including but not limited to Ambulance, Fire, Police, SES), and Nurses. It is confidential with no identifying information and your responses can therefore not be traced to you.

Upon completion participants may elect from a list of charities to which the researcher will donate $100.00 to the winner.

We are on the same path in life, but for 1 in 4, the road is just a little harder.

Let's support both big and small steps for better mental health.

Direct Solutions is proud to support Drought Angels who assist local farmers and their families across Australia who are suffering from drought. They not only offer financial support but also provide personalised, heartfelt and discreet assistance. Drought angels help those who would not normally reach out but prefer to battle it alone, which can lead to severe depression and in some cases su***de.

We are proud to support a charity that understands the importance of a person's mental health when delivering care. Direct Solutions works tirelessly on a daily basis to support and improve the mental health and well-being of our veterans and their families.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the farmers suffering from drought across Australia and we wish Drought Angels all the best in their future endeavours.

Drought Angels has always taken great pride in delivering personal, appropriate and respectful assistance to our proud farming families who register for support through us.

We are absolutely blown away by the support we are receiving from the generous public and big hearted businesses.

As in any emergency the full sitaution needs to be assessed to ensure that those at the pointiest end of the crisis are being addressed first. We are not a call centre - we are a small team, delivering personal support and doing our very best to process applications for support swiftly and simultaneously direct your hard earned funds appropriately.

Our priority is to primary producers, those with no water, no fuel, mounting utility bills and with no other off farm income. This is the reality for many we are in contact with.

Whilst we have expanded our volunteer team to deal with the volume of support requests we have received it is taking time, precious time we know, yet a careful response is required.

Farmers come first, we are prioritising these calls and then the many other calls we need to get to as well. Many frequently asked questions are on our website so please check there if you have a query before calling... chances are we are on the phone to a farmer, the reason we exist.

Finally, we are grateful for what we've called a tsunami of support - it really is quite amazing. Thank YOU all so very much.

"There's a lot more to a person than what you see on the internet, Instagram and at work. Earlier this year I injured my back and have been unable to work. Since then, I've been diagnosed with depression and am currently getting treatment for it. What I've learnt is depression can affect anyone and for different reasons.

"I want to remind everyone to check on their mates and ask R U OK? because having friends and family support you in your time of need is one of the most positive things."

Perry, the founder of Drywall Plasterers Australia (www.drywallplasterersaustralia.com.au) is a long-time supporter of R U OK? He's always asked the question of his mates and this year needed them to have his back. Thankfully, they did.

This fine fellow is Eric Johnston and today he is turning 100 years old!

Eric was born on 28 July 1918, in the final year of the First World War. He joined the Army in July 1936 and was a Corporal when he discharged in January 1946.

Eric served in the 6 Signals Corps 8th Division AIF. He was captured by the Japanese during the fall of Singapore. After a period in Changi, he was sent to the Thai-Burma Railway where he was allotted to ‘F-Force’ which was stationed north of Hellfire Pass almost at the Burmese border.

“We went back to Changi and the Thai Burma Railway 10 years ago but it was hard to remember much as things were so different from when I was there. The jungle has reclaimed the bad memories,” Eric said.

While a POW, Eric broke one shoulder and dislocated the other when he fell from a coconut tree. He was treated by ‘Weary’ Dunlop and Dr Mills and was amazed at the ingenuity of Australians in finding ways to make aids and equipment for patients.

Eric’s advice for younger veterans – enjoy what you do and make the most of your service, and he says he never wants to have another World War.

And his secret to his long life – marrying Vera, the love of his life.
Eric, we hope you have a great birthday today, and thank you for your service.
