Karitane Focus on Families

Karitane Focus on Families Karitane Focus on Families (VFC Volunteer Family Connect Macarthur ) is an early support service in

Karitane Focus on Families (VFC Volunteer Family Connect Macarthur ) helps families with young children deal with whatever life throws at them. We support parents as they learn to cope, improve their confidence and build better lives for their children. We increase families connections to other parents and local community networks. Families from Macarthur / Wollondilly with children 0-5 are referred to FOCUS because they have a need for support. This can be because they have a child with a disability, they have twins or triplets, they are having difficulty adjusting to a new baby, mothers have post natal depression or another illness/disability or they are socially isolated, having no family or friends living close by. FOCUS provides a free Volunteer Home Visiting service providing one on one support to parents in their home or other safe place. Families are linked with trained volunteers who visit weekly. Importantly our service delivery is professionally guided and complements the work of health and welfare professionals.

During the month of November, we will be sharing helpful tips and tricks for healthy eating and nutrition for your little ones! πŸ‘Ά Check out of our first tip on when to start introducing solids πŸ‘‡

Your baby might not seem satisfied or growing as expected on breastmilk or formula. This energy gap typically presents around 6 months and is a signal that your baby needs solids.

You can also look for developmental indicators that your baby is ready to start solids:
β€’ Being able to sit upright with some support
β€’ Have good head and neck control
β€’ Showing interest in food
β€’ Opening their mouth towards food and their tongue extrusion reflex has disappeared. The tongue extrusion reflex is an involuntary action that helps protect babies from choking or aspirating any food or objects that may enter their mouth. It is a normal part of their development and typically disappears around 4-6 months of age.

As a general rule of thumb, if you baby is over 6 months they can adapt to solids more easily and if they are under 6 months keep the introduction of solids slow.
