Young Optometrists

Young Optometrists Providing a voice & supporting students and Optometrists in the first 10 years of the profession.

Welcome to YO: Young Optometrists NSW/ACT

We look forward to and enjoy working within a profession that is based on patient care and interaction with people. To ensure clinical and professional growth we feel that it is important we interact with our colleagues on both an intellectual and social level. Hence YO – an organisation that focuses on improving the networking and social opportunities for young optometrists. The YO Executive:

Chair: Dr. Wilson Luu
Secretaries: Dr. Megan Tu & Dr. Celine Zhang
Treasurer: Dr. Benjamin Kwan
Education Officer: Dr. Jack Gordon
Publications & Social Media Officer: Dr. Sheila Lam
ACT Liaison Officers: Dr. Jacqueline Henwood & Dr. Rose Huang

YO want you to jump on board with YO projects and events too. We are hoping this will bring new grads out of the isolation of the consulting room and facilitate the discussion and camaraderie that so quickly dwindles after graduation. Sign up today at http://bit.ly/2cWkaKd

Two nights ago, we hosted our Ask an Optom event for 4th and 5th year UNSW Optometry students – and what a success it was!

Our panel, made up of committee members ranging from recent grads to senior optometrists, shared their insights on career pathways, practice experiences, and the many opportunities within the profession.

The goal was to open up honest conversations and showcase the diverse journeys in optometry – and we were so impressed by how engaged, curious, and motivated the students were.

A huge thank you to our incredible panelists, host, and committee for making this event happen – and to Coopervision for your generous support!

Last weekend, some of our YO committee members met up for our annual getaway, a weekend where we reflect on the year and plan for the upcoming year.

With a lot of recent changes in the industry, this weekend was a productive way for us to reflect on how else we can support our YO members and students that will soon be entering the profession.

Not only have we planned another year of engaging, high quality CPD events, but we’re looking to create more social events to build on the community and allow members to connect with each other.

This was also a way for us to meet our new team members, who brought in some fresh ideas and mindsets, and are motivated to advance the profession.

We bonded over basque cheesecakes and boardgames, learnt a lot each other, and strengthened ourselves as a team.

So if you’re an optometrist or student who is looking for more support, or wants to be a part of a growing team and community, we’d love to have you on board!

As part of YO, we love highlighting different optometry paths and journeys, but also cool passion projects and side hustles as well; we spotlight this in our blog articles “Unconvential Optometrist”.

Recently, we had the pleasure of interviewing Tsu Shan Chambers, an optometrist turned actor, writer, and producer. Tsu Shan co-write, produced, and stars in a film called MY EYES, which is a moving journey about love, resilience, and the lengths we go to for family.

It also combines her love for optometry, and raises awareness about preventative eye health.

You can read about our interview on her film and journey here: https://www.yoptoms.com/Blog/13503063
