Young Optometrists

Young Optometrists Providing a voice & supporting students and Optometrists in the first 10 years of the profession.

Welcome to YO: Young Optometrists NSW/ACT

We look forward to and enjoy working within a profession that is based on patient care and interaction with people. To ensure clinical and professional growth we feel that it is important we interact with our colleagues on both an intellectual and social level. Hence YO – an organisation that focuses on improving the networking and social opportunities for young optometrists. The YO Executive:

Chair: Dr. Wilson Luu
Secretaries: Dr. Megan Tu & Dr. Celine Zhang
Treasurer: Dr. Benjamin Kwan
Education Officer: Dr. Jack Gordon
Publications & Social Media Officer: Dr. Sheila Lam
ACT Liaison Officers: Dr. Jacqueline Henwood & Dr. Rose Huang

YO want you to jump on board with YO projects and events too. We are hoping this will bring new grads out of the isolation of the consulting room and facilitate the discussion and camaraderie that so quickly dwindles after graduation. Sign up today at http://bit.ly/2cWkaKd

Hello Potential Volunteers!

2026 marks the 60th anniversary of the Khunde Hillary Hospital, founded by Sir Edmund Hillary to support the Sherpa community in the Mt Everest National Park. This is also where we established our eye clinic two years ago. To honour this milestone, we will align our eye camp with the anniversary celebrations and provide primary eye care at three locations in the lower Everest region: Ghole, Bakhanche, and Thutencholing Monastery.

There is also an optional add-on to combine the volunteer trip with a trek to Gokyo Ri. From this spectacular alpine viewpoint, you can see four 8,000m peaks—including Mt Everest—alongside the turquoise Gokyo Lakes and the Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in the Himalayas.
The base cost of the trip is AUD $3000, which includes:
🚐 All transport throughout the journey
🍽️ All meals during the trek — breakfast, lunch, dinner, and tea each day
🏔️ Teahouse accommodation along the trekking route
🏨 Hotel accommodation in Kathmandu
📜 All trekking permits
🥾 Experienced local guides and porters, including insurance
👁️ Support from two Nepalese optometrists assisting with our eye camps
✈️ Scenic domestic flight from Lukla back to Kathmandu

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions at hello@eyes4everest.org.au.
