The brain tumour charity Dean Wood Fund

The brain tumour charity Dean Wood Fund Dean was diagnosed with a malignant and aggressive brain tumour called a Glioblastoma in April 2012 at the age of 27.

Our world and lives were quickly turned upside down and had avery uncertain future. Dean underwent two brain surgeries; first to de-bulk, reduce pressure and take a biopsy for diagnosis, the second to remove as much tumour as possible. Dean recovered amazingly well and returned home to be with me and phoebe, our beautiful daughter. At first deans determination, positive attitude and the love we shared gave us hope and the battle began. We were informed that dean would need to commence on chemotherapy tables for the foreseeable future. However, being a nurse, I could quickly realised that Deans mobility was declining and shortly after radiotherapy had finished he was hospitalised with a gain in pressure in his head. We were prepared for the worst and told that this could be the end of Deans journey. I refused to give up and with the great help from the medical team and specialist nurse dean pulled through but I was then given the news I was dreading, the tumour had not responded to treatment and Dean had a maximum of 6 weeks to live. We decided that the best care for Dean would be at home and so I took on responsibility of co-coordinating deans care and he came home to be with his family. In the days that followed Dean slowly declined but, I felt honoured to look after him in these last few precious weeks, sadly he passed away on the 14th November 2012. Dean is with us every minute of every day and is, and always will be a huge part of our lives. Me and Phoebe has vowed to talk about dean often, smile every day and laugh always in Deans honour. Only being 23 when I was widowed, I struggled and I did not know how to live a life without dean beside me. My fundraising helps me because I know how much Dean would be proud that he is helping others. As a dedication to Dean I have promised to raise funds yearly to hopefully find a cure, improve treatment and diagnosis and support those families affected. I was honoured to be asked to open a supporter group in memory of Dean and was excited to be the creator of 'The Dean Wood Fund' in January 2014. In 2016 I married an amazing man called Ash who is the most caring and understanding person I know. He has also promised to help us raise money and awarness

so today of my goes to these lovely people... sadly we were all bought together because of a tragic but a special reason... We are all widows/widowers with young children. We all went out to lunch and shared times of sadness, joy, hardship, smiles and tears. Such wonderful people who are both courageous and brave... We share a special bond and I was happy together for the feeling of togetherness... I am thankful that I am never alone :)) I have made some truly special friends from the rainbow ripples bereavement group and this is why today goes to you! thank you x

one of the ladies at the widowers group I belong to asked us "how often did you say I love you?" She regrets not saying it often enough...
Dean used to phone me every break time at work and we used to always say "love you" at the end of our conversations. sometimes he would randomly say it when we were sitting around in the evening and we would always say it every night before we went to sleep... Today I am happy to say that when I look back I have no regrets... I know we had the happiest years together and were the bestest of friends and soulmates :)) today my happiness is thinking of all the good times (which is impossible to think of all on one day because there were so many!) but I have a lifetime to relive them in my mind :) until we meet again x
