MEET. THE. TEAM. A/Prof Payal Saxena is a Gastroenterologist and an Interventional Endoscopist. She performs a range of procedures including colonoscopy, gastroscopy, Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).

She has a special interest in pancreatic disease, including pancreatic cancer screening as well as being Australia's leading expert Per-Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) which is used in the treatment of achalasia and oesophageal disorders.

Have you heard of Berberine?

Berberine is a compound that can be extracted from several different plants. It is typically yellow in colour and one of its sources is tumeric. It has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine to help lower blood sugar levels.

More recently, a study out of The Lancet showed that taking 300mg Berberine (0·3 g) twice a day was a safe and effective way to reduce the risk of recurring of colonic polyps .

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an umbrella term used to describe conditions which that involve chronic inflammation of the digestive tract. Types of IBD include:

* Ulcerative Colitis : This condition causes long-lasting inflammation and sores (ulcers) in the innermost lining of your large intestine (colon) and re**um.

*Crohn's Disease: This type of IBD is characterised by inflammation of the lining of the digestive tract, which often spreads deep into affected tissues.

Symptoms of IBD include: diarrhea, fever and fatigue, abdominal pain and cramping, blood in stool, reduced appetite, unintended weight loss.

This June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month.

Did you know that bowel cancer is Australia's second biggest cancer killer?! BUT if detected early, bowel cancer can be successfully treated in more than 90% of cases.

The National Bowel Cancer Screening Program is an Australian Government initiative that sends out free bowel cancer screening tests to eligible Australians aged 50–74 every two years. Bowel cancer screening can detect cancers at an earlier stage when treatment can be more successful.
