As loved ones transition into older adulthood, grief and loss becomes a more prominent part of their reality, but it isn't talked about often.

In this episode of Heart to Heart, we're joined by Jenny Wright, counsellor at Just Wright Counsellor, whose own life experiences have shaped the way she helps others. Jenny specialises in supporting older adults through some of life’s biggest transitions, whether it’s grief and loss, retirement or moving into care, she understands the layers of loss that can come with these changes and she helps her clients find the tools to process and move forward with dignity.

When a loved one is going through a tough time, their first instinct may not be to ask for help. The fear of being a burden to others is very real, and it stops a lot of people from opening up, even after they're asked, "How are you?" But, there's power in waiting for the right time and asking the right sorts of questions.

Jessamine Chen, Research Fellow at the Lifespan Health and Wellbeing Research Centre at Macquarie University, speaks on the importance of checking up on someone consistently. Sometimes, asking someone "How are you?" a second time can be the difference between them getting support or not.

What's the difference between Personal Care and Social Care? 🤔

Although both types of care can help a person become more independent, Personal Care deals with more hands-on support like grooming and showering while Social Care focuses on supporting a person's access to the community.

For many Like Family Members, Personal Care becomes a natural extension of the support they already receive. Receiving Personal Care through Like Family means you are getting the same warmth and human connection as Social Care. It’s not just about completing tasks, it’s about supporting your lifestyle.

Sometimes we all need a bit of time to ourselves to recharge, but when a loved one stops doing the things that bring them joy, like socialising with others, it might be a sign that there's something deeper going on behind the scenes.

In this episode of Heart to Heart, Jessamine Chen, Research Fellow at the Lifespan Health and Wellbeing Research Centre at Macquarie University, speaks on the connection between loneliness, depression, and anxiety. She talks about the behaviours to look out for that might show that a loved is in need of support.

In this episode of Heart to Heart, we sit down with Jessamine Chen, Research Fellow at the Lifespan Health and Wellbeing Research Centre at Macquarie University. Jessamine’s work focuses on mental health in older adults, particularly anxiety, depression and the role connection plays as we age.

Together, we have an honest conversation about loneliness in later life. Jessamine gently challenges the idea that getting older automatically means becoming lonely, and shares what really shapes our sense of connection over time. We talk about retirement, migration, changing health, pride, and the fear many older parents carry of being a burden on their children.

As a Social Carer, you’re not just making an impact on the person you support. Sometimes you’re making a difference for their whole family ❤️

Social Carer Julienne shared her experience supporting a young woman in her early 20s. At first, they weren't sure how they’d click, but over time they built a real bond that’s brought joy not just to the Member, but to her mum as well.
