Being a support worker means you give a lot of yourself. You build strong bonds and make a real difference in the lives of people and their families. While this work feels good, it also takes a lot out of you emotionally, physically, and mentally. This means that looking after yourself is essential for you to keep giving kind care without burning out.

When support workers put their own well-being first, they not only protect their health, but it also helps them do better work, maintain high standards, and give their clients the best possible care. Check out our blog for some practical ways to fuel your empathy and make self-care a priority ✨💆

This Mental Health month, we're shining a light on the mental and emotional toll primary carers often go through quietly

In this clip, Mat and Jenna reflect on the difficulty of asking for help. Mat shares his experiences on becoming so focused on getting through the day, that you don’t even realise the mental, emotional, and physical toll it takes. This moment highlights an important truth that carers often suffer in silence until they’re deep in burnout. It’s a reminder of how important open conversations, vulnerability, and check-ins are, not just for carers but for the people who love and support them.

We encourage you to take a moment to check in, not just with yourself, but with the carers in your life. Send a message, make a call, or ask how they're doing. A simple conversation can make all the difference ❤️

As his role of carer began to ease, Mat started to reclaim parts of himself - the parts that he had been putting on hold while looking after his parents. He reflects on what it felt like to finally have time to do things just for himself. Even with his mum more independent and settled back in Canada, the internal tug-of-war remanded. The habit of constantly being “on” did make it hard to relax.

Caregiving for his parents went bar beyond just the physical tasks, it was also the emotional and administrative burden. The constant mental load of managing their wellbeing, finances, appointments and decisions - that wore him down. Learning to ask for help didn’t come naturally - but became essential, he understood the value of communication.
