A great write up about our recent A Career in Radiation Oncology seminar held at the Townsville Hospital and Health Service on 2 May 2014. A great effort from all involved.

Students get a dose of radiation therapy as they plan careers

High school students from Townsville, Ayr, Ingham and Charters Towers visited The Townsville Hospital’s radiation therapy department for a taste of potential careers in radiation oncology, including careers as a radiation oncologist, radiation therapist and radiation oncology medical physicist.

Townsville Hospital director of radiation therapy Aniko Cooper said she was delighted to have the opportunity to show students planning their futures how rewarding careers in radiation oncology and radiation therapy could be.

“Among the presenters was radiation oncologist Dr Alex Tan as well as our wonderful radiation therapists and medical physicists,” Aniko said.

“We are an extremely busy department providing radiation therapy services to around 1,200 patients a year.”

Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists project officer Mel Grand said the students’ visit was part of the A Career in Radiation Oncology project funded through a Better Access to Radiation Oncology grant from the Federal Department of Health.

“The funding has been used to produce a set of career resources and develop a student seminar program promoting radiation oncology as a profession and career option,” she said.

“Seminars and radiation oncology department tours are being held in regional hospitals aiming at attracting and retaining future professionals in regional areas.”

Aniko said radiation therapy and radiation oncology were extremely satisfying areas of medicine and patient care.

“Being able to help and support patients through investigation, diagnosis and treatment is extremely rewarding,” she said.

“We are a very tight unit and we enjoy great camaraderie and a shared purpose when caring for our patients.

“This is, I believe, another major attraction for our field,” Aniko said.
