🗺️ Tonight: Maps, Stories & Scottish Ancestors 🗺️ All welcome from 7.00pm AEDT: https://www.sag.org.au/event-6415834

How well do you really know the places your ancestors lived? Tonight’s Scottish Research Group meeting puts maps at the heart of family history, helping you see your ancestors not just as names, but as people moving through real landscapes.

✨ We’re delighted to welcome Chris Fleet, Map Curator at the National Library of Scotland, joining us live from Edinburgh. Chris will showcase extraordinary historic maps — including early maps dating back to the 1580s and Ordnance Survey maps — and explain how they can transform your research by revealing the social, physical and human landscapes your ancestors inhabited across Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland and beyond.

📖 We’ll also hear from Dr Karen Brooks, acclaimed Australian historical novelist discussing The Whisky Widow (set in the Scottish Highlands of the 1780s) and how deep historical research, place, and women’s voices shape compelling stories.

This is a collaborative, friendly session: bring your questions, share ideas, and help others if you can. That’s what SAG groups are all about: people helping people.

🔰 Skill level: All welcome — beginners encouraged

Back to School, Family History Style

🎒 Back-to-school reflection

Even if your school days are long behind you, this time of year still feels like a fresh start.

It’s a great moment to:
📚 learn one new research skill
🗂 organise a small pile of family papers
✏️ write down a story you’ve been meaning to record

Family history doesn’t need a new year — sometimes it just needs a new term.
👇 What’s one small “back to school” goal for your family history this month?
