Meet Jess (centre), a current Australian Catholic University (ACU) nursing student who recently completed a placement in our Special Care Nursery.

Jess’s story is woven into the fabric of the Mater. She was born right here 23 years ago. Her mum was also born at the Mater, and over the years, her family has turned to us for care across generations and specialties.

Now, Jess is walking the halls where her own story began - this time learning side by side with our expert nurses and midwives. She’s building her skills in neonatal and maternity care and continuing a proud family tradition in a whole new way.

From birth to career beginnings, it’s a joy to see stories like Jess’s come full circle. We’re proud to support the next generation of healthcare professionals and honoured to be part of their journey.

For the fifth consecutive year, St Vincent’s private hospitals have been ranked number one in Australia by Medibank customers in the annual Patient Reported Experience Measures Survey (PREMS). Across every one of the 10 categories - from nurse and doctor communication to pain management, cleanliness, and patient recommendation - our hospitals were voted #1.

We also received the highest Net Promoter Score (NPS), a global benchmark of patient satisfaction in healthcare.

These results reflect the dedication of our people - clinicians, nurses, allied health teams, support staff, and administrators - across all 10 of our private hospitals in New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland. Facilities including St Vincent’s Northside, Toowoomba, East Melbourne and Fitzroy consistently outperformed peer hospitals, with Northside and the Mater Sydney scoring 10 points higher than their counterparts in medicine-related communication.

To be ranked first once is an achievement. To do so five years running is extraordinary - and it speaks to the values that have guided St Vincent’s for more than 165 years. In an evolving and often challenging healthcare environment, we remain deeply committed to compassionate care, clinical excellence, and purposeful service. We’re proud to lead the way in Australian private healthcare - and even prouder to be trusted by those we serve.

A special moment shared over tea and treats 💜

We know how important it is to connect with loved ones during those first precious days.

Our signature high tea, held twice a week, is the perfect way for new families to relax, recharge and celebrate together - like this beautiful family enjoying a visit from proud grandparents all the way from Brisbane.

The impact of our Special Care Nursery team is truly long-lasting!

Last weekend, we had the absolute joy of welcoming back Coco and Goldie - now 7 months old and beaming with smiles!

These beautiful girls made a special visit with Mum and Dad - Rachel and Nate, to see their beloved “Aunties” - Reshma and Sharon - the incredible nurses who cared for them when they arrived early at just 34 weeks.

It’s clear the cuddles, love and care left a lasting mark - just look at those grins! 💜

Meet Dr Doron Shein, one of our dedicated Neonatologists at Mater Maternity. Dr Shein has a special interest in supporting the tiniest of babies—those born extremely premature—and is deeply passionate about their growth and development beyond the NICU.

He also works closely with our Special Care Nursery team, sharing his expertise through hands-on training and thoughtful guidance around complex neonatal care. We're also extremely grateful for the incredible contribution to our SCN provided by Friends of the Mater that supports this expertise.

When he’s not caring for little ones at the Mater, Dr Shein is a proud husband and busy dad to three kids of his own! 💜

“It’s a marathon, not a sprint. But the good thing is—we’re in the race. We’re giving it a go to make things better. And that’s amazing.”

Josh is a Clinical Nurse Educator in the perioperative department at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Toowoomba. He’s also a proud Aboriginal man who plays a key role in championing cultural awareness and education across the hospital.

“To me, NAIDOC Week is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements. But it’s also an opportunity for all Australians to come together and learn about the cultures of Australia’s First Peoples. That’s pretty special.”

Josh’s days are spent supporting and educating nurses - from new graduates to senior clinicians. But for him, cultural education is just as important. “Part of my role includes raising awareness around Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural events throughout the year,” he says. “It’s something I really missed when I worked away from St Vincent’s for a few years - the opportunity to connect with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff. Coming back, and being part of things like the Brisbane connection event, where we shared culture and history with kids and managers - it meant a lot.”

Growing up, Josh’s family acknowledged their Aboriginal heritage, but it wasn’t until recent generations that deeper cultural connection started to take root. “Being able to immerse myself in my culture - through my work at St Vincent’s, through community - it means everything. It’s pushed my passion even further.

Halfway through 2025 and here’s what we’ve seen at Mater Maternity…💜

* 53% girls | 47% boys
* Our tiniest bub weighed just 1790g, while our biggest arrived at 5230g!
* We welcomed 8 sets of twins (including 2 on the same day!)
* Busiest birthday? 13 May, when 13 babies were born!

Every baby’s arrival is a story we’re honoured to be part of. Thank you to the families who’ve chosen to begin their journey with us — and a heartfelt thanks to our incredible Mater team for the expert care, compassion and dedication they bring to every birth.

We’re thrilled to introduce two familiar faces stepping into new leadership roles at Mater Maternity!

Hayley Cooke | Postnatal Clinical Team Lead - Hayley first joined the Mater as a graduate nurse in 2009. Since then, she’s supported countless families through their maternity journeys — and experienced that care herself when welcoming her two daughters at the Mater. Hayley is passionate about postnatal care and lactation support, and is committed to helping new parents feel informed, supported and confident as they begin life with their little ones.

Emma Reedy | Birth Suite Clinical Team Lead - Emma also began her nursing journey at the Mater in 2009 and has been a calm, compassionate presence in our Birth Suite ever since. Like Hayley, Emma has also experienced the Mater Maternity difference firsthand — welcoming her own baby here. She’s passionate about creating safe, positive birth experiences for families, and brings strong leadership, kindness and clinical excellence to her new role.

Please join us in congratulating Hayley and Emma—two dedicated midwives who continue to bring heart, skill and care to everything they do. 💜

From a tiny fighter at 27 weeks to a precious bundle heading home 💜
You might remember Baby Lottie’s NICU graduation not long ago – a big milestone after arriving at Mater at just 27 weeks.
We’re thrilled to share that after 78 days in hospital, little Lottie has gone home with her proud parents, Maddy and Rob.

This is what compassionate, clinically grounded, heart-led leadership looks like.

Meg – Nurse Unit Manager, Antenatal • Birth Suite • Postnatal (L):
A Mater graduate nurse who “came home,” Meg honed her skills in orthopaedics, midwifery and the NICU at RPA before returning to lead the very unit where she first trained. Today she guides our maternity team with warmth and vision, making sure every new family steps into parenthood calmly, confidently and surrounded by care.

Emily – Nurse Unit Manager, Special Care Nursery (R):
After service in the Royal Australian Navy, Emily’s nursing path took her from acute mental-health settings to midwifery, then into neonatal and paediatric intensive care. Now leading our SCN, she brings deep clinical expertise and a passion for neurodevelopmental and family-centred care to every tiny patient.

Together, Meg and Emily set the tone for Mater Maternity and SCN — championing excellence, teamwork and the kind of wholehearted care that nurtures families long after they leave our doors.
