How to check your breasts:

➡️ Arms by side: Start by standing in front of the mirror. Examine your breasts with your arms by your side. Look for changes to your breast and ni**le.

➡️ Watching closely in the mirror, clasp your hands behind your head and press your hands forward.

➡️ Then press your hands on your hips and push your elbows forward to tighten your chest muscles. Look here for any signs of dimpling, puckering, redness or changes in shape, size, texture or skin colour.

➡️ Lying on your back helps to flatten breast tissue, making it easier to examine by pressing the tissue against your chest wall.

Patients who are symptomatic from the weight of their breasts, in good general health, and do not smoke, are suitable candidates for a breast reduction.

Smoking can have a detrimental effect on the micro-circulation in the breast as ni****ne can constrict (narrow) blood vessels.

During a breast reduction, the ni**le is moved to a more ideal position and its survival is dependent on blood supply through the remaining breast tissue into the ni**le. This blood supply can be compromised in smokers causing the risk of ni**le necrosis and loss. Wound healing problems in general is significantly higher in smokers therefore it is advised that smoking be ceased at least 3 weeks prior to breast surgery to allow the vessels to return to a healthier state. It is also recommended to refrain from smoking 3 weeks after surgery to allow for wound healing.
