Earlier this month, we were grateful to bring art journaling workshops to four classes of students at ITE College West. We're always happy to work with new audiences, and we learned so much from sharing our love for art therapy and art journaling with these vibrant youths. Thanks to Ms Phua for the opportunity.

We have begun seeing clients at our new office space at Fortune Centre, 190 Middle Road. We love the bright natural light from the wide windows and panoramic view of the civic district area. The room is also big enough to comfortably manoeuvre around a massage table for biodynamic craniosacral sessions, which we are currently training in.

There are many eateries around and it's close to several MRT stations - Rochor and Bencoolen (Downtown line), Bugis (East-West line) and City Hall (North-South and East-West).

We are thankful for good friend and therapist Elizabeth Teo for sharing her cozy space with us!

Lyrical Threads 10: Therapeutic Benefits of Fibre Arts & Crafts

Thanks everyone who came for yesterday's sharing & artmaking at .hearts. Also grateful to Alexandria of Yarning Hearts for building the fibre crafts community, and the space to come together and share about topics that matter to us. Community matters so much and provides the healing beyond that of one-on-one psychotherapy. Fibre arts & crafts is something that can be done alone as well as alongside others. It is a way to connect with one another through shared interest. In yesterday's workshop, we came together and created an art piece to reflect on ourselves and our journeys as crafters. It reminded ourselves to continue creating that space to do the things we love and enrich us.

Lyrical Threads #10: Therapeutic Benefits of Fibre Crafts
A collaboration with .hearts
Date: 5 November 2023
Time: 2pm - 5pm

Learn the science behind the therapeutic benefits of fibre arts like knitting, crochet, weaving, sewing and dyeing. Hear from Shu Yin, somatic art therapist, as she shares about why so many of us are intuitively drawn to fibre arts, and the effects on our nervous system. Hear about her journey as an artist and art therapist, her work with neurodivergent people and why many are passionate about fiber arts. There will be a simple art directive for participants to have fun and reflect on their journey as crafters.

In this series, our art therapist Shu Yin shares a couple of therapeutic modalities she has received training in or is currently learning, since her Masters in Art Therapy.
Read on to find out about Somatic Experiencing®

Somatic Experiencing® was created by Dr. Peter Levine, author of Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma, and In an Unspoken Voice: How the Body Releases Trauma and Restores Goodness. Videos can be found on YouTube about the modality.

Somatic Experiencing® (SE) aims to resolve stress, shock and trauma accumulated in our bodies. Through SE, any thwarted survival responses such as fight, flight or freeze, are allowed to complete and discharge in a safe and grounded way through the therapist's embodied attunement and guidance. This leads to one feeling more at ease, integrated and present in one's body. It allows a person to more fully experience the joys of life, while having a larger window of tolerance for challenges.

By gently guiding the client to develop increased tolerance for difficult sensations and suppressed emotions, the root cause of trauma can be addressed.

Shu Yin will be hosting an informal sharing on 'Somatic Grounding' on 3 July at 8-9pm. Learn simple somatic grounding practices for yourself, or for use with clients in therapy. She will also share a bit about the benefits of Somatic Experiencing® (SE).

Co-regulation is a new parenting buzzword, but it's been a cornerstone in resilience literature and infant/toddler mental health for decades. Somewhere along the way, behavioral contingencies (rewards/consequences) became synonymous with discipline and raising children well. The science on resilience is clear, however: the way we help children become self-regulated (one day) and develop self-control, is through the beautiful process of co-regulation. I share all about how to do it on my website, and in my latest book, Brain Body Parenting.

Our group art therapy with Stroke Support Station - S3 was featured on Sunday night's news! Thanks S3 for the opportunity to serve survivors of stroke, and thanks CNA for the feature. Especially Elizabeth, Alexis, Brenda and Amira from S3 for their support, and Cherie and Kenneth from CNA for featuring our work. I would also like to thank our clients for being so sporting and for generously sharing their stories. Each population we work with has specific needs to consider when planning for and conducting our sessions, and it has been a real pleasure working with and learning from stroke survivors ✨ As always the growth and learning goes both ways, and we are always grateful for the privilege to continue our art therapy work.

On being the “bigger person”

-

[Image Description:

An image that says, “this is not being the bigger person: not calling out someone’s fault because you understand where they’re coming from, pushing aside constant disrespect because you want to keep the peace, watering down your pain so that the other person feels less guilty. It’s suppression.”]
