REFLUX ISN’T AGEIST, it can affect people at all stages of life. But so often it gets overlooked or untreated. When you successfully treat reflux, those ‘little things’ that bother you can melt into the background.

Babies sleep soundly without reflux. Teens thrive and focus better without reflux. Pregnancy feels more comfortable without reflux. Workdays are more productive and less stressful without reflux. Healthy aging is possible. A reflux-free life makes every stage a little brighter.

If you’ve got reflux, or think you might, my upcoming mini-course COMFORT FOOD might be just right for you - send me a message to get notified when it’s ready to go.

WORKING NIGHT SHIFT🌙 can take a major toll on your health. You may not be in a position to change your working hours, but there are ways to reduce the impact on your wellbeing.

🥱One of the most important strategies is to have a consistent day/night routine. Try to stick to a regular sleep schedule by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day. A small thing that makes a HUGE difference. When you’re not working, PRIORITISE SLEEP - and don’t be tempted to sacrifice rest to squeeze more into your day. The quality of your sleep is crucial to managing the negative effects of night shifts.

⏰Another strategy is to adjust the TIMING OF YOUR MEALS. Eating heavy meals during your shift can cause digestive issues, so aim to have your largest meal before your night shift starts. During your shift, choose light, healthy snacks, and avoid caffeine in the hours leading up to your scheduled sleep.

🌞 LIGHT plays a key role in regulating your internal clock. On your days off, make it a point to get outside for some sunlight and reset your body clock for the day. Exposure to natural sunlight helps your body adjust to irregular schedules - it can improve your mood and help reset your body’s rhythm. Of course blue light, e.g. from mobile phones and computer screens, can disrupt your internal clock.

😮‍💨One of the common but not recognised problems can be digestive issues such as reflux, as a result of skipping meals, unpredictable meal times, and stress.

🥙Don't underestimate the benefits of good nutrition - it can truly get your through the night and day.

THE MONTHLY ROLLERCOASTER? The women’s health journey can sometimes be a wild ride, especially with the hormonal shifts that happen not just during the menstrual cycle but also throughout pregnancy and menopause. Our hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone take us through some highs and lows, affecting more than just our reproductive health but also our mood, energy levels, digestion, metabolism - and even our skin, sleep and immunity.

But here’s the good news: the right foods can help us smooth out that ride! A nutrient-packed diet with vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats can balance those hormones and ease symptoms like fatigue, mood swings, and bloating. Omega-3s from fish or flaxseeds work wonders by reducing inflammation, while veggies like broccoli and kale help process estrogen. Protein keeps your blood sugar in check, avoiding energy crashes, and magnesium-rich foods—like nuts, seeds, and even dark chocolate—can soothe cramps and boost your sleep.

Of course, we’re all different. Genetics, lifestyle, and environment mean no two women experience hormone changes exactly the same way. That’s why a personalized approach to nutrition can make all the difference.

Let’s remember: our menstrual cycle isn’t just a hassle—it’s a reminder of our incredible power to create life. Embrace the ride!

FOOD+MEDICINE NO. 11: WATERMELON 🍉Growing up in Queensland, summer was synonymous with watermelon. It was amazingly thirst-quenching and something about having a large slice of dripping watermelon in your hands, trying to eat it without making a mess, seemed to help the process of cooling off.

Little did we know that watermelon is rich in lycopene, a potent antioxidant that the body uses to protect cells, benefiting heart health, skin, eyes, prostate, and reducing pain sensitivity.

Humankind seems to be fascinated by watermelons, and there have been some amusing stories about watermelon robberies over the years, throughout the world. I don't know if it's related to the lycopene content, but buyer beware!

"Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme..." Do you remember this old ballad? Apparently, it was collected from a retired lead miner in England (it sounds so sad 😞) and has been covered many times over, most famously by Simon and Garfunkel (I'm showing my age 😁)

But as well as being a lovely melody; it's a tribute to four incredible herbs! 🌿 These herbs not only elevate a meal but also offer fantastic benefits for your brain and mood! 🧠💚

🌱 Parsley: Rich in antioxidants and polyphenols, parsley has been found to reduce anxiety and lift mood.

🌿 Sage: With new research for its positive effects on brain function, sage is your go-to for the ageing brain (no promises!).

🌿 Rosemary: "Rosemary for remembrance" they say. This herb has long been valued for memory and concentration, and its anti-inflammatory qualities.

🌿 Thyme: Naturally rich in carvacrol, thyme is a natural mood booster that can help to increase the neurotransmitters, serotonin and dopamine.

Next time you’re in the kitchen, add a sprinkle of these magical herbs for a boost to your brain and mood! 🌿✨ Which one do you love using the most? Let me know in the comments below! 👇💬
