The masseter muscle is a thick, rectangular muscle located on each side of the jaw. It plays a key role in chewing by elevating the mandible (lower jaw) to close the mouth. As one of the strongest muscles in the body relative to its size, the masseter provides the force necessary for biting and grinding food.

Jaw pain associated with the masseter muscle can arise from overuse, clenching, or grinding of teeth (bruxism). Tension or spasms in the masseter can lead to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, causing pain in the jaw, face, and head. Stress or improper alignment of the jaw can also contribute to masseter-related discomfort.
