Tips for managing household tasks with a sore wrist or thumb 🤍

If everyday jobs are flaring up your wrist or thumb pain, a few small changes can make a big difference 👇

🍳 In the kitchen
• Only fill the kettle with the amount of water you need so it’s lighter to pour
• Place a colander in the sink when draining rice or pasta so you can use both hands on the pan
• Wear oven gloves when holding pans or the kettle to spread the load across both hands
• Tap the side of a new jar lid on a firm surface (bench top or chopping board) to release the seal
• Use grippy mat pieces to hold both the jar and lid — great for bottles too
• Consider a jar-opening aid if grip strength is an issue

💻 At the computer
• Use a rolled towel or forearm support to keep wrists in a more neutral position
• Try an ergonomic mouse to reduce wrist strain
• Take regular breaks from desk work
• Roll your shoulders and stretch your arms to support posture
• Use a foam roller to ease tight upper-back muscles

Did you know physiotherapy can play an important role in supporting autistic children?

For many kids, challenges with coordination, balance, posture, strength or motor planning can impact confidence at school, sport and play.

Our paediatric physiotherapy team at Total Physiotherapy Manly Vale works with children and families to:

✔ Improve gross motor skills
✔ Build strength and coordination
✔ Support posture and body awareness
✔ Increase confidence in movement
✔ Create personalised programs in a calm, supportive environment

Every child is different — and therapy should be too.

If you'd like to learn how physiotherapy may support your child, read our latest blog or book a paediatric assessment.

Exercise in Pregnancy - Myths busted.
Pregnancy is a time when everyone has an opinion about everything, including exercise.
Here are some common misconceptions.
MYTH: Abdominal curl exercises cause separation of the muscles.
FACT: Research shows that abdominal curl exercises during pregnancy does not increase the likelihood of separation postpartum. However, every pregnancy is different so it is best have your technique for these and other abdominal exercises checked by an expert.
MYTH: Pelvic floor exercises can make the pelvic floor too "tight" making it more difficult to deliver the baby.
FACT: The opposite is true. Women who do pelvic floor exercises correctly during pregnancy are less likely to sustain a 3rd or 4th degree tear or to develop leakage of urine after the birth.
MYTH: Women should not do pilates after the first trimester.
FACT: Regular pilates can actually lead to better birth outcomes for the mother and baby.
✔ Our team of 4 expert women's health physios can provide an and assesment and individualised advice on how to correctly perform abdominal and pelvic floor exercises during pregnancy (and after).
✔ Even better, we offer a pregnancy exercise class on Mondays at 6pm with Margo who also has childbirth education experience.

Recurring injury holding you back?
If the same injury keeps flaring up, it’s often a sign the body hasn’t built the strength or capacity it needs, not just that it needs more rest.

That’s where an Exercise Physiologist (EP) comes in 👟💪
EPs design progressive, targeted strengthening programs to address the why behind your injury, not just the symptoms.

✔️ Build tissue strength and load tolerance
✔️ Improve movement patterns and control
✔️ Reduce re-injury risk
✔️ Return to sport, work or life with confidence

Rehab doesn’t stop when pain settles — strength is what makes it last.
If you’re stuck in the cycle of re-injury, it might be time to strengthen smarter.

📍Chat to our team by calling (02) 9907 3021 to see if EP-led strengthening is right for you

Thumb pain that just won’t settle? It might be De Quervain’s 🤕

De Quervain’s tenosynovitis affects the tendons at the base of your thumb and can make everyday tasks like gripping, lifting your phone, or opening jars surprisingly painful.

Common signs include:
• Pain or swelling near the base of the thumb
• Discomfort with gripping or pinching
• Pain that worsens with repetitive use for example picking up your baby or pushing the pram
• A sharp ache when moving the thumb or wrist
When should you see a physio?
👉 If pain lasts more than a few days
👉 If daily tasks are becoming difficult
👉 If rest isn’t helping
👉 If pain is getting worse, not better
A physio can help with:
✔️ Activity modification
✔️ Targeted exercises
✔️ Splinting advice
✔️ Reducing pain and preventing flare-ups
Early treatment = quicker recovery 🙌
If thumb or wrist pain is holding you back, we’re here to help.

Don’t carry those aches and pains into another week…

If your body’s been talking to you lately, Sunday is the perfect time to listen.

If you’ve been putting up with:
☑ Ongoing back or neck tightness
☑ Shoulder or knee pain that flares with activity
☑ Stiffness after swimming, walking or sitting too long
☑ Old injuries that keep popping up

…it’s time to get on top of it before the week gets busy.

Life on the Northern Beaches is active — beach swims, dog walks, sport, work and family — and little niggles have a habit of turning into bigger problems when they’re ignored.

Booking your physio session now means starting the week feeling looser, stronger and more comfortable — not pushing through pain.

✔ Trusted local physios
✔ Hands-on treatment + personalised rehab
✔ Appointments available this week

Physio or Exercise Physiologist — who should you see? 🤔

Both help you move better, but when you see them matters.

👉 See a PHYSIOTHERAPIST if you have:
• New or ongoing pain
• An injury (sport, work, or everyday life)
• Swelling, stiffness, or loss of movement
• A flare-up that’s stopping normal activity
• Post-surgery or acute injury concerns

Physios assess, diagnose, and treat injuries, helping settle pain and guide recovery early on.

👉 See an EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGIST if you:
• Are managing a long-term condition
• Need structured rehab or strengthening
• Want help returning to exercise safely
• Are building capacity after injury
• Need supervised exercise for health conditions

EPs focus on improving strength, fitness, and confidence with safe, tailored exercise programs.

✨ The good news?
They work best together.

Many patients start with a physio, then transition to an EP - or see both at the same time - for the best long-term results.

Not sure who you need? We’ll guide you 💙
