The Australasian Students’ Surgical Association (ASSA) represents student surgical societies across Australia and New Zealand, supporting over 20,000 medical students through education, leadership, and networking.

ASSA runs initiatives such as national webinars, online resources, advocacy for students, and the Australasian Students’ Surgical Conference (ASSC) — the largest student-run surgical conference in the Southern Hemisphere.

🚨 SURGSOC BTO RECRUITMENT 🚨

Keen to get involved in SurgSoc in 2026? Applications to join our team as a Basic Training Officer are now open!!!
BTOs are vital members of our society who play a key role in organising and teaching at our events, including our popular suturing workshops. This is a fantastic opportunity to build your surgical skills, network with an array of healthcare professionals and give back to the medical student community.

All students who would like to apply for this position must fill in the form below. The deadline to submit an application is Sunday, 12th October at 11:59 PM.

Based on these responses, applicants will be chosen to be interviewed by current members of UNSW SurgSoc and asked to demonstrate some basic suturing skills. Interviews will be held in the afternoon of Wednesday 22nd October, prior to our 2025 AGM.

Hey everyone! Just passing on a message from MedFac about an exciting new initiative aimed at increasing surgical exposure, teaching, and mentorship.

"A Day with a Surgeon" will pair students with consultant surgeons in a specialty of their interest for a day in their private operating theatres and/or rooms. This will provide students a unique opportunity to gain insight into the daily life and work of a surgeon, encounter surgical diseases and operations not typically seen on regular placements in the public hospital, and receive invaluable one-on-one mentorship.

This program is available for Phase 3 students on their Surgery, Selective and Elective terms at POW, St Vincent's, St George and some Rural Clinical Campuses.
