It is with sadness that we announce the closure of Sydney Veterinary Emergency & Specialists (SVES). Effective Friday 15th August.

Like many veterinary hospitals across Australia, we have faced ongoing challenges in recruiting specialist veterinarians. Despite our best efforts to maintain services, recent changes within our team have made it no longer viable to continue operating.

For pet owners with current or past patients at SVES, all medical records will be transferred to your referring veterinarian. If you have questions about your petโ€™s ongoing care or need guidance on alternative referral options, please contact your referring vet directly.

We sincerely thank our clients, referring veterinarians, and the wider community for your trust and support over the years. It has been our privilege to care for pets and their families.

For enquiries regarding medical records, please email contact@sves.com.au

Thank you,
The SVES Team

Chocolate is bad for pets because it contains two TOXIC ingredients: Theobromine and Caffeine.

Here's how you can help protect your pets:

1. Store chocolate out of reach
2. Be vigilant during gatherings and with children
3. Know the symptoms of ingestion (including vomiting, diarrhoea, restlessness, hyperactivity)

In severe cases, chocolate ingestion can cause tremors and seizures, which can lead to neurological damage if left untreated.

If you suspect that your pet has ingested chocolate, give us a call at any time for emergency veterinary advice ๐Ÿš‘

May is Melanoma Awareness Month! ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ

Melanoma isn't just a concern for humans โ€“ it can affect our furry family members too!

Dogs (and very rarely cats) can develop melanoma, most commonly in their mouth or on their paws ๐Ÿพ

Melanoma is a type of cancer caused by a variety of genetic, environmental and behavioural factors.

Certain breeds, such as Cocker Spaniels, Schnauzers, Poodles, and Chow Chows, are more predisposed to melanoma due to their genetic makeup ๐Ÿงฌ

While not as significant as in humans, prolonged exposure to UV rays โ˜€๏ธ can contribute to the development of melanoma.

Repeated irritation or injury to a specific area, such as excessive licking, can lead to abnormal cell growth and potentially melanoma.

Malignant (cancer-causing) melanomas can be an aggressive cancer ๐Ÿšฉ

Keep an eye out for pigmented lumps that may start to bleed or ulcerate as they get larger. In some instances, a tumour may be amelanotic (without dark pigmentation), and appear pink in colour.

This beautiful boy Bailey recently underwent surgery for melanoma on his nose! His story will follow soon โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

Did you know that just like humans, our companion animals sometimes need life-saving blood transfusions? ๐Ÿฉธ๐Ÿพ

Treatment of things like severe anaemia, trauma, and clotting disorders often involve blood transfusions.

Transfusions are a critical procedure โ›‘๏ธ and require careful planning and monitoring to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Unlike humans (and dogs!), cats lack a universal donor, so matching the donor and recipient blood types is essential.

Blood typing identifies the blood type, and crossmatching tests for compatibility beyond just the type.

Beautiful no-eyed Norma recently gave blood for a patient who presented with severe anaemia (low red blood cell count), neutropenia (low neutrophil [a type of white blood cell] count ), and thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

Signs of a "blocked" cat ๐Ÿฑ

If your cat is showing these symptoms, they may have a urinary tract blockage, or "urethral obstruction" in medical terms ๐Ÿฉบ

Urinary blockage occurs most commonly in male cats, but can be seen in females too.

Urethral obstruction can result in life-threatening consequences, affecting the bladder, kidney, and heart ๐Ÿซ€

A blocked cat is considered a medical emergency โ€“ if you suspect your cat might be blocked, present to our clinic immediately ๐Ÿš‘

๐Ÿ”” Reminder!

The Easter long weekend begins this Friday, and itโ€™s important to remember that many of your regular vets will be closed on the public holidays!

๐Ÿ’‰ If your pet is on a regular medication, such as insulin, heart medication, or thyroid medication, check now to make sure you have enough stock to last the long weekend.

As an emergency hospital, we triage your little ones based on individual patient stability โ€“ this could mean extended wait times for a medication refill!

Additionally, if you are new to our clinic or have not been to us in the past 6 months, you will be required to have a consultation with an emergency vet before we can dispense prescription medication for your pet ๐Ÿ’Š

So check your medications now to ensure you can enjoy a worry-free long weekend! ๐Ÿฅณ

Ear cleaning with ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿซง

In Veterinary Dermatology, a video otoscopy (VO) is a specialised procedure used to examine and treat chronic ear conditions in animals.

It involves using an otoscope equipped with a camera to visualise the ear canal in high definition.

The video is projected onto a screen, allowing for magnification and detailed observation.

This little lab had badly infected and inflamed ear canals, impacted with an accumulation of earwax. He was put under general anaesthetic (GA) for a deep clean ๐Ÿงผ and then administered with an in-ear medication to reduce the risk of reoccurrence!

After a smooth procedure and recovery, he went home feeling much more comfortable with his squeaky clean ears โœจ
