“At 44, I was fit, healthy, and living a great life… then came my stage 4 prostate cancer diagnosis.”

Sydney dad of two, Tim Weale, was living his dream, travelling Australia with his family when subtle symptoms signalled something wasn’t right.

At first, he brushed off changes to his urination and unexpected aches and pains. But soon after, tests revealed an aggressive prostate cancer that had already spread to his bones and lungs.

Since his 2023 diagnosis, Tim has faced hormone therapy, radiation, and chemotherapy with incredible courage - all while continuing to work, make memories with his family, and stay positive. Thanks to treatment, his PSA levels have dropped from 154 to 0.01. 🙌

His journey is a powerful reminder to listen to your body, get checked, and live every moment fully.

Testicular cancer is rare but primarily affects young people aged 15-45. Around 95% of people will survive at least five years after their initial diagnosis.

Treatments for testicular cancer are highly effective for most people affected, but sometimes these treatments can lead to challenges like fatigue, muscle loss, reduced s*x drive, anxiety and effects on body image. That's why ANZUP is committed to advancing research to improve both survival and quality of life for those affected.

🔬 Our current clinical trials include:

CLIMATE: Investigating a new blood test (miR-371a-3p) to detect residual disease after surgery, aiming to better personalise the management of disease.

P3BEP: Comparing accelerated versus standard chemotherapy schedules to enhance outcomes for patients with advanced germ cell tumors.

TIGER: Evaluating high-dose chemotherapy and stem cell transplant for relapsed or refractory germ cell tumors.

📢 Just published in The Lancet Oncology!

Predictive and prognostic value of baseline PSMA-PET total tumor volume (TTV) and SUVmean within a randomised phase 2 trial of enzalutamide versus enzalutamide plus [177Lu] Lu-PSMA-617 (ANZUP1901)

Earlier this year, the ENZA-p trial received global recognition for showing that combining LuPSMA with enzalutamide helps people with high-risk metastatic castrate resistant prostate cancer live longer, better lives.

In this sub-study, Prof Louise Emmett and team show that PSMA-PET total tumour volume is
✅ Prognostic of overall survival with enzalutamide alone
✅ Predictive of improved overall survival with the addition of LuPSMA to enzalutamide

PSMA SUVmean was not predictive or prognostic for progression free or overall survival when LuPSMA is administered with enzalutamide.

These findings provide valuable insight into how PSMA-PET imaging can be used for predicting response to therapy.

Congratulations to Prof Emmett and the team on another globally recognised contribution to prostate cancer research! 🎉

Today is World Kidney Cancer Day. 🫶

Kidney cancer is the 7th most diagnosed cancer in Australia. In 2024, around 4,700 people were diagnosed, and approximately 41,144 Australians were already living with the disease.

It most often affects adults over 45, but it can affect people of any age. Renal cell carcinoma, the most frequent kind of kidney cancer, makes up over more than 90% of adult kidney cancers.

🧠🩺 Kidney health is not only important for physical and mental wellbeing, but poor kidney function also affects quality of life.

This year, show your kidneys some love ❤️
Ask your doctor about three essential kidney tests to help stay on top of your health.

🚨 Big news in bladder cancer research!

An ANZUP-led trial has found a new way to treat high-risk bladder cancer and stretch global drug supplies, thanks to a powerful treatment combo.

The gold-standard treatment, Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG), has faced global shortages since 2013. But new findings show that adding chemotherapy drug mitomycin to BCG therapy is a safe, effective alternative to BCG alone.

“Adding mitomycin means patients require 40% less BCG,” said lead researcher Professor Dickon Hayne. “This could offer a simple, cost-effective treatment option for people with bladder cancer.”

People in the trial also completed treatment more often, suggesting the combination was better tolerated than BCG alone.

🖤💛❤️ National Reconciliation Week 2025
Theme: Bridging Now to Next

This week, ANZUP proudly joins communities across the country in recognising National Reconciliation Week and reflecting on this year’s theme: "Bridging Now to Next".

We stand in solidarity with First Nations peoples, reaffirming our commitment to listening, learning, and acting to support reconciliation and equity in everything we do.

In clinical research and cancer care, we know that real progress only happens when all voices are heard and all communities are included. We’re continuing to build research that respects culture, strengthens relationships, and helps close the gap in cancer outcomes.

Let’s keep walking together towards a future that’s fair and just, because reconciliation is everyone’s business, every day.

Happy International Clinical Trials Day!

Today ANZUP recognises international clinical trials day and celebrates the essential role that clinical trials play in advancing medical knowledge and outcomes. ANZUP’s mission is to improve the lives of those affected by prostate, kidney, testicular, pe**le and bladder cancers towards our vision of living life without fear of cancer.

We do this by conducting world-class clinical trials and research and to date over 10,000 people have participated in 35 globally significant ANZUP led and collaborative clinical trials.

One of ANZUP’s largest international trials ENZAMET, tested whether adding a hormone therapy (enzalutamide) to standard-of-care prostate cancer treatment could improve outcomes for patients.

Results showed the addition of hormone gave people with advanced prostate cancer about a 30% better chance of survival compared to standard treatment alone.

The findings contributed to enzalutamide being added to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) in 2023 — an Australian Government program that subsidises the cost of prescription medicines. This has improved access to this life-saving treatment by making it more affordable for those who need it.
