This is the problem with surgical tourism: A young woman travelled to Asia to have dental implants placed. The clinician used implants too long and has placed them through the inferior alveolar nerve in mandible. Patient now has a completely numb lower lip and chin.
The Australian Health Practitioner Regulatory Agency, The Dental and Medical Boards of Australia maintain standards among health professionals and ensures the safety of the public. Such standards may not exist in other countries. The monetary saving is not worth the risk.
These are cheap dental implants, poorly designed, made of poor quality metals and destined to fail. I had to remove the implants urgently and will look at performing a microsurgical repair of the nerve. This woman will never fully regain nerve function.

A day in the life of an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon: Octogenarian. Fall in the retirement village. Landed on her fragile mandible causing it to shatter in multiple pieces. I had to fix the fractures with extraoral incisions and a load-bearing reconstruction plate.
Note her thin, atrophic mandible due to 50 years of denture wearing.

A day in the life of an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction and pain can be quite debilitating. Often associated with clicking or locking of the jaw. If left untreated it can lead to chronic facial pain and osteoarthritis. An arthrocentesis and arthroscopy is a simple procedure which can resolve such symptoms. The joint is washed out with sterile saline then a steroid or hyalurinic acid is injected. The internal structure of the joint can be viewed using a very fine endoscope.
The video shows the sterile two port arthrocentesis technique.

A day in the life of an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon: Female, assaulted. Sustained multiple fractures to the left cheek bone and eye socket. Such injuries can have major consequences such as major disfigurement, limited mouth opening, numbness of the face, damage to the eye, double vision or even blindness. Urgent assessment and treatment ensures a good outcome. With this case, I stabilised the fractures with titanium mini plates and screws via cosmetic incisions through the mouth and skin creases in the eye lids.
