PAIN ON BREATHING?

This needs to be diagnosed accurately. It can be:

- rib or thoracic vertebral pain ( which responds well to chiropractic treatment)

- it may also be a cardiopulmonary issue (heart or lung problem). Your chiropractor will refer you for medical assessment if this is suspected.

- most importantly, do not ignore this pain

- please get in touch if you require further information

NECK PAIN MUST BE PROPERLY DIAGNOSED: SEE YOUR CHIROPRACTOR

Neck pain can have hundreds of different sources.

You should never attempt to ’treat’ it yourself or enforce an exercise program until the source has been diagnosed by an experienced health professional such as a chiropractor.

Exercise can severely aggravate many conditions.

Once you’re given the all clear and the pain has been correctly diagnosed and treated, you can exercise safely.

Look after your spine and it will serve you well.

NEVER TRAIN WITH BACK PAIN:

Back pain can be a warning that serious, irreversible damage has occurred or is about to occur. It must never be ignored.

If you notice back pain, pain shooting down the leg, tingling or muscle spasm, the nervous system is warning you to stop.

Do not listen to friends, training partners, personal trainers or people who say: ” I’ve been training for 20 years and this exercise will fix your back….etc etc”. They have no idea which structure is causing the pain. Even a qualified health professional doesn’t know until they’ve examined you.

Professional athletes never return to training whilst there’s pain. There’s a reason for this: they have health professionals constantly assessing them and know there’s no such thing as ’stretching out’ an injury, fixing it with foam rollers etc. Healing takes time and varies with different body structures.

Nerve damage, tearing of spinal disc fibres, muscle tendon ruptures and many other problems which may cause permanent disability, can often be avoided with common sense and a check up with a health professional prior to training.

Chiropractors specialise in assessment, diagnosis and correction of muscle and joint imbalances. This treatment is something that is of immense value to anyone commencing an exercise program.

IT’S EASIER TO PREVENT PROBLEMS THAN TO CORRECT THEM!

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO WARM-UP BEFORE A WORKOUT?

Warming up correctly protects you from injury and makes your workout more effective.

***NEVER DO PASSIVE STRETCHES BEFORE A WORKOUT BECAUSE THEY WEAKEN YOUR MUSCLES
Research has shown that dynamic stretches are the ones to do prior to working out.

Your training session should look like this:

1.Warm up must include dynamic stretching
2.Workout or exercise session
3.Cool down including static stretching

Do you want more information about dynamic stretching?

HEAT OR COLD, WHICH SHOULD I USE?

It depends on the age of the injury.

First 24 to 48 hours:

* Have you heard of R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression and elevation) ? This is aimed at reducing both pain and swelling/
inflammation.

Once 48 hours has passed and swelling has decreased:

* Heat helps to soothe pain. It’s also useful for stiffness and arthritic discomfort.

Sometimes, within the first few days after an injury, alternating hot and cold packs are used to increase circulation. Twenty
minutes of one, then twenty of the other can be repeated a few
times.

Cold packs constrict blood vessels, heat packs relax and open them. This causes an increased pumping of blood and lymphatic fluid.

Temperature (hot and cold) and pain sensations are all carried to the brain via nerve fibres called the lateral spinothalamic tract.

When you apply hot or cold packs, the brain perceives the heat or cold instead of pain. This is how ‘hot’ ointments such as liniments work too.

You can therefore use temperature to mask pain in many cases.

Summary:

Both hot and cold packs mask pain, but THE IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE IS THAT cold reduces inflammation and swelling by constricting the blood vessels.

****Both hot and cold packs can burn the skin and need to be covered adequately. Please take extreme care with elderly patients who have thinner skin or patients who may have a lack of sensation in the area being treated, or those who may not be able to communicate adequately.
