The evolution of a scar!

These three photos tell a powerful story of healing after abdominal muscle repair surgery.

• Pre-operative
• 7 weeks post-surgery
• 3 years post-surgery

At 7 weeks, scars are often still red, firm and very noticeable - this is a completely normal stage of healing. With time, proper care, and the body’s natural remodeling process, scars continue to soften and fade.

Three years later, the scar has matured significantly and blends much more naturally with the surrounding skin.
Scars are not static - they evolve. And sometimes the biggest changes happen long after the early recovery period.
Every patient heals differently, but this progression is a great reminder that patience is an important part of the journey.

This patient underwent a bilateral thigh lift.

▫️Our skin is the body’s largest organ and can stretch significantly during weight changes. The inner thigh skin is also thinner than many other areas of the body, which is why surgeons carefully plan scar placement along natural lines where possible.

▫️Because the inner thigh area moves constantly with everyday activities like walking, early recovery often focuses on limiting friction and movement to help support healing.

▫️Scars continue to mature and soften over time, often improving over 6–12 months.

These photos were taken before surgery and approximately 6 weeks post-procedure.

This patient lost 50kg before having a brachioplasty (arm lift)

These photos are taken before and approximately 18 months post op.

So what is the recovery for a brachioplasty?

On average, the downtime is 2 weeks. All the sutures are internal and do not require removal. Patients can shower normally after the first day with lukewarm water & stitch area should be dried and not left wet. They can also expect to have some form of compression garments for 6-8 weeks after the operation. The reintroduction of upper arm exercise programs has to be taken slowly and I would advise to commence slowly after 6 weeks.

▫️Extended Abdominoplasty & Flank Liposuction

An extended abdominoplasty doesn’t just address excess skin at the front of the abdomen - it can also improve contour through the flanks (“love handle” area) in the same procedure.

Every surgical procedure is carefully planned to suit the individual, and suitability depends on your anatomy, goals and a full consultation with a qualified specialist plastic surgeon. All surgery carries risks and recovery varies between patients.

Photos are taken before and after approximately 8 weeks post surgery.

I’m so proud of this tiny little pin that you can see on my scrubs. I was given this pin today which marks 25 years of working in the New South Wales Health Service, particularly at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Now it’s only a tiny little pin, but to me, it means so much more than any gold medal or any award that I’ve ever received.

Over the last 25 years, I’ve treated thousands of people with everything you can imaging. Cancer reconstructions, trauma, reattaching digits and limbs, microsurgery, gunshot victims… you name it I’ve done it. Those who only know me from my instagram feed would be forgiven for thinking that all I do is body contouring- I tend to keep this side of things to myself. But to be honest- I love it. Training generations of registrars into young surgeons, working with amazing nurses, doctors and colleagues is a great joy. It is also a thank you to the patients who I have met on the way.

Maybe I can make it to 50 years!!!

▫️ After surgery, your body needs the right nutrients to help support healing.
Vitamin C can support collagen production, immunity, and may help reduce bruising.
Iron helps deliver oxygen to tissues, which can support recovery - especially for women.
Together, Vitamin C may help your body absorb iron more effectively.

Always follow the advice of your surgeon or GP regarding supplements.
