Something I see very commonly in clinic … a sports podiatrist’s delight (for me… not for you 😅).

One of the earliest signs people notice is that sharp discomfort with the first few steps in the morning.

It’s often not just “tight calves.”

What’s usually happening is the plantar fascia stiffens slightly overnight,
and that first step loads it quickly, that’s where the pain comes from.

Common pattern:
• Pain with first steps out of bed
• Eases a bit as you move
• Can come back with longer walking or standing

Early on, it tends to respond well when you:
• Adjust load (don’t push through it)
• Wear supportive footwear during the day
• Gradually rebuild strength and capacity

If it lingers or keeps coming back, it’s worth getting it checked! These are much easier to manage early than when they become stubborn.

Good luck to everyone running the half this weekend 👏

Big effort getting to the start line … hope you all have a great run and enjoy the day out there!

Looking forward to seeing how everyone pulls up over the next few days.

Tight hip flexors in runners are common … but stretching alone usually doesn’t fix it.

In many cases, it’s actually a load distribution issue between the hip flexors and the glutes during running.

So the tightness keeps coming back.

Here are 3 simple exercises I commonly use in clinic:
• Hip flexor stretch (with control)
• Glute bridge
• Hip extension control

The goal isn’t just to stretch, it’s to improve how the load is shared through your body when you run.

If this is something you deal with regularly, it’s worth getting your running mechanics assessed so you’re not just chasing symptoms.

Save this if you’re always stretching your hip flexors after runs.

Over the weekend, I attended a workshop with Stuart McMillan (Olympic sprint coach with ALTIS) on sprint performance and systems thinking.

What stood out most was the systems-based approach. Performance isn’t driven by one isolated quality, but by how all components interact under load.

In practice, this showed up clearly through:
• hip extension
• hip flexion
• foot-to-ground interaction
• spinal engine

And just as importantly, how we think about constraints:
• capacity
• capability
• coordination

A reminder that most performance or injury issues aren’t about one “weak link”, but about how the system adapts and self-organises into the most efficient strategy available under current constraints.

I also took from it that performance isn’t about chasing perfection in one area; it’s about maintaining a consistently high level across all areas so the system stays stable and functional.

This aligns closely with my work as a sports podiatrist, using soft tissue therapy, strength and conditioning principles, and clinical reasoning to better understand how the body adapts, compensates, and restores balance. Particularly in the context of injury.

Always valuable stepping outside your own field and seeing familiar patterns through a different lens.

Revisiting the Hawkesbury Canoe Classic 2024 a couple of weeks ago.

Loved teaming up with Nick Stepkovich (lead Sports & Musculoskeletal Physio) and the therapy team.

Prepping and tuning up participants for the race!

111km marathon canoe/kayak race through the night 🤯

Some very passionate competitors that started 40+ years ago from the beginnings of the Classic.

Well done Sydney... this is amazing news 🤩

We did it, Sydney! We are beyond thrilled to announce that, thanks to YOU, the TCS Sydney Marathon presented by ASICS is now the 7th member of the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors – a historic moment for Australian sport!

This achievement is about every single one of you. Big or small, first-timers or marathon veterans, every step you took played a part in putting Sydney on the world stage. Your stories – the triumphs, the struggles, the grit, and the spirit – have shown the world what it means to be a runner in Sydney. And today, we celebrate YOU for this accomplishment.

Together, we have forged a new chapter in Australian sports history. As the world watches, they’ll see what we already know: that our marathon is more than a race; it’s a movement built by the dedication and passion of a community that believes in each other and inspires the next generation to take their first steps.

To every runner, volunteer, cheer squad, and supporter – thank you for bringing us here. Thank you for your strength, your stories, and your support. The finish line was only the beginning; as a Major, we’re setting our sights even higher.

Let’s continue to make history, one stride at a time.

Here’s to our legacy that will inspire runners for years to come.

With Love,
The TCS Sydney Marathon Team
