According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, undertaking at least 2 sessions per week of muscle strengthening exercises may reduce premature death by as much as 21% and cancer related mortality by up to 34% (Stamatakis et al. 2018).
Doing sufficient muscle strengthening activities may also reduce the risk of chronic conditions such as osteoporosis and sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass and strength) in older Australians (Seguin & Nelson 2003).
